Blogtober - Day Eighteen

Last week we visited the city of Derby, something we hadn't done since before Covid and lockdown.  The last time we were there we went to see Luke Jerram's Moon which was on display in the Cathedral.  This time we went to visit his  Gaia on display in the same venue.

The Cathdral is a lovely venue

Gaia features detailed NASA imagery of the Earth's surface.

The installation provides the opportunity to view planet earth floating in three dimension much as an astronaut would.

It is hoped that it will give a renewed responsibilty for taking care of the environment especially after the Covid 19 epidemic.

The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth's surface.  Visitors were invited to stand 211 metres from the artwork to see Earth as it appears from the moon.

In Greek mythology Gaia is a personification of the Earth.

Back outside there were signs of Autumn in the trees.

Here is a - link- to the post I wrote about the Moon.

  1. Oooh impressive and so colourful! How did they get that huge Earth inside the small cathedral! It must have been particularly interesting after seeing the Moon in the same place. Well worth the trip. 😊

    1. I wonder that too it moves around the country quite often so there must be a very rigid routine to follow. I was glad we visited before it closed on Sunday:)

  2. It's an impressive and interesting display with a serious message about appreciating and taking care of our environment. Our DiL and our grandson who came up from London for a visit went to the cathedral to see it.

  3. That is amazing & hard to imagine how large we really are compared to that size as it hangs there in the cathedral. What is actually made from, as it can't be too heavy I would think. Ooh, we weren't covered in cloud? Thanks for sharing, take care & hugs.

    1. I thought you would like to see your country, I waited for it to spin round - very slowly - to catch it. The warmer countries didn't have as much cloud cover as others. I scanned the photos I took of the information panels but nothing to say what it is made of. I'll look further.

  8. Glad you got to visit again now that Covid has calmed down. It surely has interupted our lives these past couple of years. Wonderful display, plus the cathedral is gorgeous.

    1. It is a lovely cathedral, not huge but very elegant inside. Two years of covid and one of illness has stopped me doing so many things, it's good to get out and about a little:)
