Today

Today in the Garden and on a Walk

Whilst walking across Berryhill Fields and back via Fenpark early this morning we spotted swallows, a skylark, loads of crows, two lovely foals in the fields, elderflower in bud also comfrey and foxgloves flowering.  I have no photos to show you as it was drizzling slightly I didn't take a camera.  I should have put the little one in the pocket of my waterproof jacket as by the time we were halfway along the walk the weather had dried up.

I've done some weeding still too much grass amongst the flowers which I am unable to pull out as it hurts both knuckles and elbow. Brambles are growing everywhere, Crocosimia is shooting up through the middle of the sedum and what I think is Feverfew is growing around and choking the white flowered shrub which we call 'the plant we bought at Clumber Park' because we can't remember what it is called.  All seems such a mess at the moment.  I did cut down lots of Aqilegia that had gone to seed and pulled out some forget-me-nots which were also going to seed.   I filled the bird baths with water and rescued a few things that had blown over in the strong wind we had yesterday.

I think it is Sunday though I'm never sure.

The plant we call 'the one we bought at Clumber Park'

A cutting we took of the plant above last year is growing well.

Teasel - I was going to pull it out but apparently the Goldfinches love it.  As we have lots of those visit I'm leaving it.

 Ceanothus

Hawkweed, both common and orange in the grass at the side of the front path.

  1. Sicillian Lemon Garlic!!!! Gorgeous! Never seen before! I love it!

You have so many lovely blooms, right in your garden. -smile-

Love the "personalized" name for that plant.

The rogue grass.... Do you mulch around flowers and shrubs? We don't enough, but I guess, enough of it, keeps weeds down. Then you'd not have as much weeds to pull.

But then, how important are weeds, in the grand scheme of things? -smile-

Just talking to Dear Daughter in law... About all the things we do not just run out and buy now. We spend our money on food. Think of all the money we are saving, on *junk.*

    1. Thank you Wow, I don't mind the weeds as such we have Buttercups and Willowherb everywhere and the Hawkweed on the front lawn by the path, it's the lomg grass in the flower beds that irritates me as it strangles the flowers and grows taller than them. I think even if I find out the name of that plant it will still be 'the plant we bought from Clumber Park':)

  4. Lots of colour in your garden despite the weeds. I didn’t realise goldfinches like teasle, I’ll have to allow mine to develop too. I’m finding all the bank holidays adding to the total confusion of what day or is. At least nature is looking good. B x

    1. Thank you Barbara, apparently the goldfinches love the little seeds on the teasel head. I'm totally confused by the days the only day I know for sure is bin collection day on Tuesday but even then I forget until others put their wheelies out on Monday evening:)

    1. Thank you Julie, the forget-me-nots have gone over very quickly haven't they? I've pulled some out but there is still a lot to go:)

  6. Wonderful Rosie. Everything seems to be coming up well this year apart from the alchemilla, lots of plants seem to be flowering that haven't done so before. I love your hawkweed, so bright and cheerful. I'm not sure why they make a fuss about bank holidays at the moment, you just can't tell the difference from a normal day at the moment. 😊

    1. Thank you Karen, the Hawkweed always grows along the edge of the lawn at he front. It comes back every year even though it eventually gets mown off. It just seemed like a Sunday yesterday we tend to stay at home on BH Mondays anyway but we did take an evening sroll when it got cooler:)

  7. Your walk sounded good & like me it's when you either don't or forget to take your camera, you wish you had. Your garden is looking lovely & I do like forget-me-nots & have finally got a few growing in this garden. The seeds & fluffy cats don't go together though. Although we don't have cats anymore, they are shocking to comb out of a long-haired cat.(giggle). Take care, stay safe & huggles.

    1. Thank you Susan, you've reminded me that we were always brushing seed from the cats' fur when they came in from the garden, goosegrass seeds too. Also making sure grass seeds didn't get in their eyes. We don't have cats now but love to see the feline visitors to the garden. Take care:)

  8. Lovely photos. I love the one wih bells - Sicilian Lemon Garlic and I have a lot of those plants named after places where I bought them as I can't remember what they were! I am still hoping some of the Fox and Cubs seeds I collected last year and threw on the "no mow zone" will produce plants. Your walk sounds lovely. Take care and stay safe and well.

    1. Thank you RR. We saw the Sicilian Lemon Garlic bulbs last year and thought we'd give them a try and it was fun watching the come out. We moved them from the pot they were in to the garden and two or three of them have come back this year. I've recently noticed them in other gardens as we've walked by over the last few days. I hope your Fox and Cubs appear in the no mow zone. We went for an evening walk yesterday when it was cooler. Take care:)

  9. I like the description of your walk. Seeing swallows and a skylark would be a joy. The garden needs attention. The grass could do with a cut. There are some buttercups on one edge, but I quite like their golden flowers. Foxgloves are popping up everywhere, the pink variety. Again I don't mind them as they give a cottage garden look. I'm happy to sit quietly in the garden on this sunny bank holiday afternoon.

    1. Thank you Linda, it was good to see swallows and last night we went for an evening stroll and saw more skylarks, Paul managed to get photos of them in the air, lots of starlings too whirling around some trees ready to roost. I love foxgloves especially the native pink ones. There seems to be a lot of buttercups around this year. We've kept some but others have been taken out where they are choking other plants. I hope you had a lovely Bank Holiday:)

  10. Such a vibrant colourful garden. Love the lupin and the Sicilian garlic. Very unusual! Grew up calling bistort ' Sweaty Feet' X

    1. Thank you Sharon, the lupins come back year after year but we keep them in a pot to keep the slugs at bay. I've never heard of Bistort as 'sweaty feet' I guess it is their 'perfume'?:) I must go and sniff them:)

  11. You have some wonderful plants growing in your garden Rosie. I have never heard of Sicilian lemon garlic - it looks really unusual. The clump of chives look really attractive with their purple pom pom type heads and I bet the bees love them! :)
