Flowers on Wednesday

I always enjoy visiting the lovely Derbyshire town of Buxton where a walk through the Pavilion Gardens, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton,  is a must.  Nearby in the Pavilion itself is a glasshouse containing many exotic plants. 

Let's go inside and take a look

There were some lovely and unusual flowers to delight the eye.  I can identify the Bird of Paradise flower, Cyclamen and a white Poinsettia but I'm not certain about what the other two flowers, bottom left and right above, are. The flower bottom left could be an Abutilon plant but I'm not entirely sure.  I feel I should know and as soon as someone tells me I'll think 'of course they are'.  I hope someone reading this will be able to identify them for me.

My camera couldn't do justice to the deep and vibrant colours of the flowers as the lens kept steaming up in the heat.

We used to have one of these plants in a bay window in the foyer of one of the museums I worked in and it always attracted people's interest.

The glasshouse at the Pavilion Gardens was designed by Edward Milner, pupil and then colleague of Sir Joseph Paxton.  They were responsible for the building of many greenhouses and glasshouses including those at nearby Chatsworth House and also at Tatton Park and of course, the Crystal Palace.

I haven't joined in with Riitta's Flower Wednesday for a while but today I walked through the lovely Cosmos flowers just before the Lakeside Walk at Trentham Gardens and couldn't resist taking photos to share with you.   They have been looking stunning for a few weeks now.

As it is such a grey, drizzly and breezy day, well it is here in Staffordshire, I thought I would introduce some sunshine in the form of a few sunflowers.

Honeysuckle

 Some flowers a delicate yellow in colour

 and some more pink in colour

 The scent from both was wonderful,  drifting in the warm air

of a hazy, summer afternoon.

In the gardens of the Trentham Estate, sited in between the meandering 'Rivers of Grass' flower beds and the formal Italian Garden you can find the metal Arbour or walkway.

At the moment it is full of roses and as you walk through the scent of them is wonderful.

I'm afraid I don't know the names of the rose varieties but they were all lovely in the mornng sunlight.

Flower Wednesday

Since my last post on our garden the lupins have come into flower.

 

 They were given to me many years ago by a friend and they come back every year.

 We keep them in pots and stand them on gravel.  If we didn't they would be eaten by slugs and snails very quickly.

We have to keep them well watered too especially in very hot and dry weather

It is worth caring for them though as they certainly make me smile every day when they are in bloom.
