I love tulips when they are newly cut, tightly in bud, stems straight and strong with just a hint of the colour to come.
But I love them even more when they begin to open up their flowers to the light, when their colour changes from bright and clear to deep and warm, when they begin to droop, when they become 'blowsy'. Everyday in their vase they change shape, they become a living sculpture; twisting and turning, leaning and bending, working their magic.
Their petals begin to fall with a soft plop on the table top and then, only then, when they are almost devoid of petals do I bid them farewell.
They are beautiful and get more interesting with age! I haven't treated myself to any tulips yet this year. I am still amazed that each time I buy daffodils they seem to be a different variety. Vive La Difference! (Or words to that effect) x
ReplyDeleteI love tulips too ... especially when they flop over! So pretty!

ReplyDeleteMy daughter brought me tulips today for Mothers Day.It's a huge bunch and they are beautiful.I just hope they last until we get back from Cambridge on Thursday.
ReplyDeleteRosie,
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! They are probably the only flower that looks as good almost dead, as when they are fresh...
Lovely pictures

They are beautiful and I love the photographs.
ReplyDeleteTulips are my favourite cut flowers and I was lucky enough to be sent a gorgeous vase full of assorted coloured ones yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of small bunches of tulips in my garden. They are bright red and add a beautiful splash of colour.
ReplyDeleteI don't often buy tulips in a bunch. I am not so keen when they start to droop! x
