I love making pomanders. The citrus and spicy aromas and the rich, bright colours make me feel quite festive.

For some reason I didn't make any last year and I missed having their evocative scent around the house.

I wrap the ribbon around the oranges securing at each end with a dressmaker's pin. Then I make holes in the orange skin with an old knitting needle.

Then I place the cloves in ground cinnamon and stick them in the holes. I dust the oranges again with the cinnamon. The oranges then need placing somewhere warm so they can dry out.

As they dry the oranges become lighter. They can be hung from the tree or placed in a bowl on a table. They look lovely and smell wonderful. Definitely the scent of the season.
They are lovely..you have inspired me to make some too!

Lovely, where do you get your cloves from? I like to oven dry slices of orange to use in my christmas decor. Our house now has a holly tree so no more going my mum and dads for holly.
ReplyDeleteOh, I need to do this again. Somehow they have fallen by the wayside the last few years! I love the idea of dipping the cloves in cinnamon before sticking them in the oranges. I've never done that before. But one year I made them out of tangerines. Wonderful smell!
ReplyDeletethe scent of orange is so very festive... i was going to dry some but this looks like fun.

Hi Rosie,
ReplyDeleteI have never tried making pomanders, but may have a go if I can find the time. I love the scents of Christmas don't you?
Brave of you to venture to that blue and yellow store ~ I always remember the ones in the UK being packed with crowds of people at any time of the year and they are no different here.

Not sure they would last..my grandfather loves oranges..I think he would be able to eat also the cinnamon! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteLovely. I think I'll have a go.

Oh what a good idea. I do love pomanders. I buy oranges and in our house they never get eaten because no one can be bothered to peel them! I think I have some cloves in the cupboard so this is what I'll be making this evening!
ReplyDeleteThe smell of oranges and spices at Christmas time is my favourite. I love to have dried orange slices amongst pot-pourri throughout the whole year. Thanks for sharing how you went about making your pomanders. They look very festive indeed. x
ReplyDeleteLike Pamela, I have not done this in years. That is a good idea to dip the tip into cinnamon. Must remember to buy fresh supplies.
ReplyDeleteThis is a pleasant memory, even though I made them only one year.
ReplyDeleteThanks for inspiring us!
I love the snow flakes. Fifteen fans and counting. You are a star. I think I will recruit Susan and try making some Pomanders. I'm making a Lemon and Ginger Ice Cream Tart for Christmas Day instead of the usual Christmas Pud. See you some time over the hols I hope.
