Sunflowers in September

The sunflowers in the garden have grown quite tall.

They  are reaching for the sky

We've never grown any as tall as these.

We took the seeds from last year's sunflowers which were a darker chocolate brown colour.

There are three plants and each has flowers of a different hue.

They are popular with the bees.

Yesterday we saw a little group of young goldfinches checking them out as they flew into the nearby Tamarisk tree.  We've been putting sunflower seeds in the feeders for ages as the goldfinches seem to prefer them to niger seed and the ground feeding birds benefit from the seeds dropped as the finches crack them in half.

The colours are Autumnal and as the plants sway in the breeze today there is a definite change in the air.

All for now.  Next post Harper Street and the 1950s house at Middleport Pottery.

  1. Beautiful sunflowers Rosie - we only grew miniature ones this year but you can't beat the large ones :) Goldfinches here prefer sunflower hearts too to nyger. In fact all birds like sunflower seeds. Look forward to your next post. Take care.

    1. We only use sunflower hearts for the hanging feeders and suet sprinkles for the ground feeder which the collard doves and the robin wait for in the morning, We also have a hanger with fat balls for the smaller birds who love them. The sunflowers have been dashed by the rain over the last couple of days:)

  2. Loving the sunflowers. They are big, bright and beautiful. Ours grew tall this year with lots of heads that the bees have already enjoyed and the birds are looking forward to feasting on.

  4. What a beautiful range of colours . I've not grown sunflowers since I was a child & I'm sure our native birds like them too, so may pop some into the garden soon. Tanks for sharing, take care & hugs.

    1. I'm hoping the birds will use them over the winter if they survive the storms (plants not birds:)) You too take care:)

  5. Beautiful! Ours have been really tall too, it must be all that sun we've had. It's nice to see all the different colours plus there seems to have been a lot more flower buds per stem. How lovely to see the goldfinches tucking in. You'll have to plant a few of the seeds next year and see if they are just as tall. 😊

    1. Glad yours have grown tall too, they have had lots of encouragement from the sun. We will save some seeds for next year and leave the rest for the birds:)

  6. How lucky to have some sunflowers of your very own to enjoy! I've never planted sunflowers, but they are by far, one of my favorites, and I love going to see them in nearby farms.

  7. Your sunflowers are tall and beautiful. In recent years we've grown sunflowers from seed given to us by our daughter who lives near us. They certainly produce flowers that make us smile. We too leave the dry flower heads so that the birds can take the seeds.

    1. They have grown tall this year, much taller than last year. Some of them were dashed by the rain overnight and several unopened flower heads lost. They always make me smile,I'm hoping they will stay around for a few more weeks:)

  8. They are beautiful Rosie! You win the prize for the tallest! I grew mine from saved seed this year also but they didn't reach their full potential due to the drought and didn't develop seeds. Hope you have a good weekend. Bit sad here after the news. x

    1. Thank you Simone. They are twice the height of last year's sunflowers. We have collected seed from some of the flowers ready for next year. Yes, it is sad news, even though I was born just in George VI reign, I wasn't quite two years old when Elizabeth became Queen and she is the only monarch I've known. She will be greatly missed:)
