Down the Lane

Down the lane the trees and hedges are full of berries.

The warm sun this morning belies the cold almost autumnal weather we've experienced over the last few days.  Even the heating kicked in one morning and another day a cardigan was needed in the house.

The appearance of berries always moves thoughts on to Autumn even though I don't feel I've quite finished with what Summer has to offer.  The plums have yet to ripen on the tree at the top of the garden and the dahlias, zinnias and cosmos are still blowing around blowsily, their colourful heads dancing merrily in the breeze.

Rowan berries, black berries, elderberries, hips and haws are all showing their colour along the path.

Above and below Rowan berries.

Blackberries

Some ripe enough for picking to go with apples for an apple pie.  We left them for the birds and mice or perhaps jam makers.

Elderberries

Enough for both birds and wine makers to harvest.

Rosehips - a good source of Vitamin C.

I remember being fed teaspoons of Rosehip syrup as a child.

Hawthorne Berries

There were so many Hawthorne bushes that there must have been, sometime in the past, a Hawthorne hedge all the way along the path separating it from the fields.

  1. A lovely post and photos Rosie. I noticed a definite feel of autumn in the air in the garden the other day - at this time of year there is often a change in the "light". I remember rosehip syrup when little too! My son and OH picked some blackberries last weekend and we had blackberry muffins and an apple and blackberry crumble and had enough left to freeze :)

Take care and have a good weekend.

    1. Thank you RR. Yes,the light is changing and the evenings darkening earlier, I still haven't made a summer pudding yet, I must do that this week whilst there are still berries around. The blackberry muffins sound lovely, I once had an apple and blackberry scone which was delicious:)

  5. The temperature here has dropped and suddenly we start to think about Autumn days especially as we see the neighbours' hawthorn tree is full of berries and we start to pick ripened figs and watch the apples get bigger and almost ready to enjoy. Our daughter says she has gathered blackberries and will be making jam during the last days of her Summer holiday now she's back in Berkshire. I hope that the dry weather continues so that you can get out for walks whenever possible.

    1. Thnk you Linda, I was surprised by the berries - quite early and so many. Yesterday was warm and dry so we had an early walk around the lake at Trentham, I'm hoping it will brighten up again today, it is very grey at the moment. Picking ripened figs sounds wonderful, we had the first plums from the tree yesterday:)

  6. A lovely walk & the birds will certainly feast well this autumn. Our weather is up & down, but Spring is definitely in the air with blossom trees well out & the wattle with masses of pompom flowers & scenting the bushland. Take care & hugs.

  7. It is nice to see the berries with their splashes of colour amongst the greenery. I hope my little rowan tree has berries one day. It seems to me that everything was late this year and now it has decided to finish up early! :)

    1. Thank you Simone, the Rowan trees I photographed were quite small ones and full of berries, I hope your tree produces some berries, perhaps next year? I'm not sure how old they have to be. It has been a topsy-turvey year:)
