Looking Autumnal

The tulip tree leaves are turning yellow already.  It's a very Autumnal thing but it could also be lack of any decent showers of rain lately.  Leaves are also falling on the top lawn.  August is fast fading.

The garden is looking uncared for, although work has been done.

Especially on clearing the gravel path of weeds.

Heleniums and Echinaceas are doing well.

There is a small apple on the small apple tree.

Out and about on our walks there have been plenty of berries and fungi too.

There is now a slight chill in the morning air and jackets, admittedly lightweight ones, have been worn again first thing.

Can you bear another Wallaby?  I hope so.  This one is Nibbles.

Down the Lane

Down the lane the trees and hedges are full of berries.  

The warm sun this morning belies the cold almost autumnal weather we've experienced over the last few days.  Even the heating kicked in one morning and another day a cardigan was needed in the house.

The appearance of berries always moves thoughts on to Autumn even though I don't feel I've quite finished with what Summer has to offer.  The plums have yet to ripen on the tree at the top of the garden and the dahlias, zinnias and cosmos are still blowing around blowsily, their colourful heads dancing merrily in the breeze.

Rowan berries, black berries, elderberries, hips and haws are all showing their colour along the path.

Blackberries

Some ripe enough for picking to go with apples for an apple pie.  We left them for the birds and mice or perhaps jam makers.

Enough for both birds and wine makers to harvest.
 

Rosehips - a good source of Vitamin C.

I remember being fed teaspoons of Rosehip syrup as a child.

Hawthorne Berries

 

 

There were so many Hawthorne bushes that there must have been, sometime in the past, a Hawthorne hedge all the way along the path separating it from the fields.

Lovely to eat as they are but I've also made an apple and plum crumble for tea or dinner depending on which part of the country you come from.

Butterflies and Berries

Just a few of the delights I saw in the garden today whilst we were cutting back some of the shrubs. The last flowers and butterflies of summer as well as the rich red berries and rosehips - a sure sign that autumn is on the way.
