Spring Flowers

Into February with a bit of colour and cheer from some seasonal flowers. Hellebores at a local garden centre.

Such beautiful colours and so cheerful

I wish they would grow in our garden but they don't like the damp, clay soil.

In the large tub by the back door the early Spring flowers are blooming.

Snowdrops

Small Iris and Winter Aconite.

Indoors the Hyacinths are gently wafting their scent around.

  1. Don't let your clay soil stop you from growing these beauties! I grow quite a few hellebores in pots - they like John Innes no 3 compost and I was told to give them additional pelleted chicken manure every year. Mine are against north facing walls. They are looking very happy so far and the ones in pots seem to come into flower earlier than the ones in the border. You can see a few photos on my blog https://feltabulous.blogspot.com/2024/01/welcome-hellebores.html. I have taken a few more photos of them today, so will post those shortly. You saw some lovely ones at the garden centre - I would have had to buy some!
    Best wishes

    1. Thank you Ellie, I think that we may have to grow some in pots as we had a couple in the garden for a few years and they disappeared one year, we assumed the roots had rotted in the soil so I've been loathe to have anymore especially as they are quite expensive but I do love them so perhaps just a couple in pots to see how it goes. Thanks for the advice re compost and chicken manure. I will pop over to read your blogand look at your photos:)

  2. I had no idea they came in such a brilliant pink. How very pretty! Now I want to get more. My soil is clay too, Rosie, but I have mine in a west-facing, somewhat shady location and they have been doing okay.

    1. The pink is lovely isn't it? Also the pinky green in the last photo, such wonderful colours. Glad yours are doing okay, I've read what you and Ellie (above) say and now I'm tempted to try some more:)

  3. I have never had muchluck with hellebores either Rosie - although our soil is sandy. I saw some yellow flowering ones on someone's blog recently and they were stunning. Your Spring flowers at home look lovely. Sadly aconites never do well here. I must check our snowdrops as you can't see them from the house but the white camellia is flowering now.

    1. We had two of the greenish flowered ones for a few years but they disappeard so we assumed the roots had rotted in the damp soil. The yellow ones sound lovely, I'm very tempted to try to grow some in pots to see what happens as they are quite expensive to buy. I was pleased to see the small showing of aconites as again this year they seem to be late. I hope you find some snowdrops hidden away:)
