For International Women's Day

Some of the women in my family of whom I have fond memories.

My Mum

Sitting left

My Grandma

My Granny

My Aunt Gladys

I'm listing them with the names they were born with rather than the names they took when they married.

Florence Hilda Limb 1916 -1999

Florence Mary Stubbs 1884 -1962

Rosa Edwards 1879 - 1963

Gladys Emily Limb 1907 - 1967

I'm also adding two of my great-grandmothers although I never met them.

Martha Elizabeth Matthews 1854 -1915
born Welby, Grantham, Lincolnshire.

 Sarah Ann Hodgetts 1854 -1939
born Birmingham, West Midlands.

Also my other two great grandmothers.  I've never seen photos of them.

Celia Palmer Young 1866 -1915 born Ilkeston Derbyshire

Sarah Ann Gutteridge 1851 - 1915
born Stanton, Newhall, Derbyshire.

I've just noticed that three of my four grandmothers died in 1915.  Two of them are buried not far from each other in a cemetery in Shirebrook, Derbyshire. .

  1. A lovely, lovely post...

What a treasure, all these old photos are. How wonderful that they did not get lost, along the way.

  2. Interesting Rosie & I've photos in that old style too. I did have one of my great grandmothers who passed away when I was 15, but I never met her daughter who was my grandmother as she passed away when my Mum was 17. In fact, that is strange, as we were only talking about her the other day after all this "panic buying" of toilet rolls, which I can't understand & I know she would have laughed her head off. Thanks for this post. Have a good week & take care.

    1. Thank you Susan, both my grandmothers had died by the time I was 13 and both grandfathers by the time I was 5 so I never really knew either of them. I wonder why toilet rolls? I remember there being a shortage of those in the earlys 70s and panic buying in the ocal co-op:) I've no idea why:)

    1. Thank you, I'm happy to have all the photos but do need to think about passing them on - the originals that is. I only have two cousins left one on each side of the family and both older than me. Lots of the photos I have came from my Mum's cousin in Canada and lots aren't labelled:)

    1. Thank you Linda, I think they all struggled especially the grandmothers and great grandmothers. Mum and her sister lived through the war too:)

  6. You have some stunning and beautifully turned out women in your family Rosie. I like the Edwardian high collars and hats - it was such an elegant look. It is wonderful you have all these photos and would be even more so if you ever get to locate photos of your other two great grandmothers. In my life I met both grandmothers and two great grandmothers on my Mum's side. I was very lucky. :)

    1. Thank you Simone, my granny was always neat and tidy and grandma always wore black, both wore flowery pinnies over their clothers. I think because my parents were older parents there was a gap of years between me and my grand parents. Both grandfathers had gone by the time I was five:)

    1. Thank you Julie, grandma in particular was quite strict but caring too. Apparently she wouldn't let Mum and her sisters go out without hat and gloves especially on a Sunday:)
