When we first visited Bangor Pier we walked right to the end which seemed to be a good way across the Menai Strait. The photo below was taken in April 2010.
This time the last bit of the pier was cordoned off as work was being done to the building at the end.
After a warm day a gusty wind had developed which got stronger the further along the pier we walked.
It was still quite warm in the early evening sun.
The tide was out leaving exposed banks all along the estuary. The sound of Oyster Catchers filled the air. The mud banks were covered in them.
Down under the pier it was wader time
Grey Heron
Curlew
Egret
Another grand day, for a get-away.
ReplyDeleteAgain, you are so lucky to have so many places, you can easily get to, for a bit of a break. Here, it seems everything is so far away. It's so much more of a chore, to get to them, and get back.

Thank you WoW, it gets harder to go away for more than three nights at a time I know what you mean about it sometimes being a chore:)
DeleteI love that the cafe is called Sea Shanty. A great name for a coastal cafe. Nice sea bird pics. A lovely trip you are having. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Shazza. This is the dog friendly cafe I mentioned on your comment on my last post. It's a super name for it and it is so different inside from what you might expect:)
DeleteA lovely area to explore! Terrific shots!
ReplyDeleteThank you William:)
DeleteWhat a wide pier but looking really sturdy which is a good thing in my book! Lovely to be able to see so many different types of birds too and have so many places to explore. 😊
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen, yes the peir feels very safe, I was thrilled to see the curlew:)
DeleteLovely photos Rosie. We didn't visit Bangor when we were there but we could see the pier and the town from where we were stopping. The Sea Shanty looks good - something I didn't spot! Can you please let me know where it is.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo of the castle :)
Thank you RR. The cafe was in Trearddur Bay not far from South Stack. We'd gone up to South Stack hoping to have a wander and then lunch but the centre was not only closed but demolished. We walked in high gusty winds to Ellin's Tower and discovered that it had collapsed in February during a storm. We were sent to a lower car park with a catering van but that shut its doors just as we arrived as it was swaying in the wind, so were the porta loos!! We decided to drive back and see what we could find. The Sea Shanty it so different inside to what you would expect - not a normal seaside cafe. It was dog friendly too so many dogs inside with their owners enjoying really good food. We were so wind blown and tired by them we decided to stay for welsh rarebit which was delicious:)
DeleteThanks so much Rosie for letting me know where the Sea Shanty is. We discovered the missing visitor centre at South Stack too and parked in the lower car park although we had to wait to get a space!!!! What a shame the catering van shut as you arrived! It was very very windy when we went too. Afterwards I was a bit annoyed with myself that I hadn't spent more time looking for birds when we visited but it was all rather overwhelming and wind rather irritating!! Still at least I saw my first choughs! :)
DeleteLooks like a wonderful explore. Great pictures, made me feel like I was there.
ReplyDelete<a href="https://4ccccs.blogspot.com/2019/09/another-week-and-whats-to-show-for-it.html:>Sandy's Space</a>
Thank you Sandy, glad you enjoyed the photos:)
DeleteNot a part of the world I know so I was very interested to see your photos. The pier exhibits some of that strange but appealing architecture which seems peculiar to the British seaside.
ReplyDelete"Didn't you have a loverly time the day you went to Bangor?"
Thank you John, yes the pier is quite lovely and no amusement arcades -yet! Yes, we had a 'loverly time' - I remember that song, did it ever get to No 1? Tt seemed to be around forever:)
DeleteIt's a shame you couldn't walk all the way along the attractive looking pier, but a stroll would still be enjoyable as you observed the different birds, experienced the sea breeze and looked out across the water.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda, yes I would have liked to walk right to the end just to see how far away it was from the other coast line. It was getting very windy by the time we got to the pier so it was a question of not letting anything blow over the side. I was thrilled to see the curlew:)
DeleteLoved the pier and the wonderful array of birds. It was a delight to come along with you and admire the scenery.
ReplyDeleteThank you MM, it was a joy to see the birds, although it was very windy we watched them for ages:)
DeleteI think i've certainly discovered this year just how lovely Wales is! I love the look of the Sea Shanty :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Pam, the Sea Shanty was great. I agree Wales is a beautiful country, I love visiting:)
DeleteThank you so much, for noticing/liking my latest Header!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery few seem to do this.
And for me, a person who has so much fun, with changing the "look" of my blog,.... I am so grateful, when someone does. -smile-

😊
DeleteNothing better than exploring the seashore (except perhaps walking a pier!). Beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I'm glad you visited and left a comment and also that you enjyed the post:)
DeleteLovely! It's more than ten years since I walked the length of Bangor Pier but am I right in thinking that there are inscriptions on the edge for the people who donated money to its refurbishment? I know that I liked them somewhere and I think it was Bangor. You are making me hanker for Anglesey now - and an ice cream. The Sea Shanty does amazing ice cream. x
ReplyDeleteThank you Mrs T. Yes the pier rails and seats were covered in names, some with little flowers attached so I assumed they were paid for as a kind of memorial by families whose relatives had died, I'm glad the money received keeps the pier going. I did wonder what was happening to the building at the end. It was so windy the day we visited the west side of the island I think they said it was the residue of the storms from the USA, we could barely stand at South Stack so warm food was in order at the Sea Shanty - I bet it is lovely for ice cream on calm, sunny days. We'd sat in sun eating ice cream at Molefre on the opposite coast the day before:)
