An Early Morning Walk

Last week we made a long overdue visit to relatives and we decided that now we don't have to dash there and back in a few hours in order to look after Max we would treat ourselves to an overnight stay and visit some of our old childhood haunts as well.  We grew up in the same area and our parents took us to the same places even though we didn't know each other at the time.

Which is the reason we found ourselves early one morning walking in Clumber Park  a Grade1 listed park now owned by the National Trust.

The Chapel was built in the time of the 7th Duke of Newcastle whose family lived on the estate.  Construction started in 1886 and it was opened three years later.  It was designed by G F Bodley.

My favourite geese - Greylags

You can see the outline of the old house next to the chapel in front of the stable block.  It was almost destroyed by fire in 1879 and rebuilt.  The house was finally demolished in 1938.

It was very quiet down by the water's edge, there were very few people out and about so early.

We walked towards and over the bridge.

Unfortunately it was vandalised last year and is still being repaired.

It is a beautiful bridge.

After our walk it was time for tea and toast in the cafe which had just opened at 10a.m.  We sat in comfy chairs beside this fireplace which was decorated ready for the Easter weekend.

After breakfast it was time to move on so there was no time to see the walled garden, the Discovery Centre and inside the chapel.  Maybe we'll go back again.

In my next posts we'll visit Creswell Crags and Sherwood Forest.

  1. Lovely, lovely, lovely....

Especially love the room, housing the Cafe. It must be someplace old, as the fireplace looks carved and old. Ahhhh the wallpaper! :-))) All in all, a delightful place to have tea. :-)))

  6. Bodley's work seems to crop up everywhere I go - lots of examples in Cambridge. Sometimes it can be disappointing to revisit old haunts, glad this wasn't the case here.

    1. Thank you John. it was very different to when we were children, you could park anywhere and walk, picnic or play ball games eventually a man on a bike with a leather money purse acoss his shoulders would find you for a few pence parking money, now there are gates and cattle grids and someone to check your membership card or take your money, it is still very beautiful though and far more to see and do, weused to make our own entertainment then:)

  8. Such a beautifully decorated fireplace. I didn't do any decoration for Easter this year - not sure why! I am drawn to the arts and crafts wallpaper too. Have a lovely week Rosie. x

    1. Thank you Barbara, yes the vandalism was awful, I think the person waas caughtand charged - they drove a car into it deliberately then set it on fire! No idea why. It was lovely to spend more time visiting people and places:)

  14. What a lovely place to visit! I think I saw something about it on the television last year: the dry weather revealed a more substantial and detailed layout of the buildings than had previously been realised. I think it was Clumber Park? x

    1. Thank you Mrs T. Yes it was Clumber Park, a few years before they had an exhibition where they laid out the floor plan and then put old photographs and information panels about the rooms it was fascinating, then the whole site was revealed to them by the hot summer:)
