An Early Morning Walk

We woke up to sunshine this morning and the breakfast time local weather presenter said that it would be sunny from 'the get go' so we thought we had better get going and set out for a walk.

We didn't go far just into the local woods at Hem Heath.

The sun was teasing us by popping in and out but when it did appear the light on the bright acid green leaves was so pretty.

We walked further into the wood listening to the mellifluous song of blackbirds and robins, to the gentle cooing of pigeons and the hollow 'tip tap' of woodpeckers, high in the trees.

Further and further under the green canopy of trees until we found what we were looking for

A blue haze started to appear amongst the trees - stretching way back, as far as the eye could see

Of course, May is the month of bluebells and they were here already, waiting for us to find them

There are many more to come and these woods are going to look and smell wonderful in another week. I think we were just a few days early in our search.

What a lovely month May is.

  2. We've just come back from a morning walk too. We only saw a smattering of bluebells, not a blanket like yours. We must look harder!

  4. How lovely. I've done Wildplay with the Wildlife Trust in Hem Heath Wood so I actually know where that is! It was a really pleasant spot for a wander, I said I'd like to see it in all the seasons, but haven't managed to!

    1. It used to be great when you could walk right through from opposite the Hem Heath pub to Wedgwood - have a coffee in their visitor centre and then walk back - it is all blocked off now. I bet the wildplay was fun:)

  5. I like the word 'mellifluous' and may start using it in conversation! The bluebell wood looks so beautiful. We used to pick them years ago, making sure we picked carefully and left the bulb in the ground. I don't think we're allowed to pick them anymore in the woods. May is indeed a lovely colourful month. x

    1. Someone once paid me the compliment of saying I had a melifluous voice so it has always stuck in my head. I remember picking bluebells for the nature table at school and also to bring home for Mum who would put them in a milk bottle on the kitchen windowsill - they were always wilted by the time they got home:)

  8. Beautiful. A good reminder to go and take a walk in the woods and see the bluebells. I think they must be out earlier this year so they'll be out and gone before we get the chance otherwise.

    1. Ah, yes it needs to be a warmish sunlit day to get the full impact of the scent and colour of the bluebells doesn't it?:)

    1. That woodland is on the site of an old pit in the south of the city enclosed by railway on one side and industrial estate on the other plus the Wedgwood factory at the rear and yet is so beautiful and full of lovely wildlife:)

  14. We walked on bank holiday Monday too. Saw amazing bluebells. I kept telling my children to look at them. They didn't seem too impressed but I'm sure when they're older they'll be heading out to see the bluebells too. x

    1. I'm sure in a few years they will grow to appreciate them. When we were children in our village the woodlands nearby were full of bluebells and we used to take nature walks from school and pick them for the nature table and also to take home for our mums. How times have changed:)
