Into March

Into March we go, I thought I'd be glad to say goodbye to February this year but the last three or four days of it were beautiful with a gentle hint of SpringThe weekend was beautiful too.

I forgot to say White Rabbits on the 1st March.  It was something that we always said when I was a child.  A superstition I suppose like touching wood, crossing fingers and not opening umbrellas indoors.  Lots of others like throwing salt over your left shoulder if you spilt any and not passing anyone else on a staircase.  Not walking under ladders always seemed sensible to me as danger could lurk there for those both up and under the ladder.

White rabbits at Peak Wildlife Park.  They are usually out in the open but these had been kept inside because of the kits.

Spring flowers are opening up in the garden and the heather is buzzing with bees.  I can actually hear them over the hissing of tinnitus in my ears.

There have been some wonderful evening skies.  Red sky at night, a shepherd's delight, red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning.   Another saying or superstition from childhood.  There are many of those.  Have you any to share?

Yesterday

There was a beautiful sunrise yesterday morning.  The sky changed from pink to apricot and then gold in just half an hour.  It was still very cold outside with traces of snow and ice still across the garden and on the road.

I took these photos from the bedroom window.  You can just see the school building through the trees.

I wasn't sure if I could capture the intensity of colour and light in the sky on my little camera.

It didn't do too badly.

Mr Fox visited later in the morning.  He was looking for a break in the ice on the pond so he could have a drink.  Paul had his camera handy and snapped a few photos of him.  He's still limping slightly as if he has a leg injury of some kind.  He still looks very healthy though.

A little later I saw the Great Spotted Woodpecker in the Tulip Tree and on the fat ball feeder, this time I was the one whose camera was to hand.  I just managed a couple of photos before he flew away.

We've seen him in the trees over the hedge in the school grounds.  It would be nice if he visited over the weekend at the time of the bird count, but it's extremely unlikely.

We're back on-line......

......touch wood! and it didn't take as long as we thought it would. So what have we been doing whilst we've been off line? More painting and decorating and moving of furniture. Plus a lot of de-cluttering, re-cycling and boxing up and storing lots of things that we somehow don't want to part with but don't use very often. There have been trips to the local skip, B&Q and Ikea.

We've been working in the garden when possible but the rain has made it difficult to achieve very much!

There were lots of butterflies around on the sunny days

The Japanese anenomies are in flower - the pink ones always open first - the white ones are still in bud.

I've also been reading

Watching beautiful night skies

and the latest Harry Potter film - now showing at our city museum

Also trying, unsuccessfully, to repel gorgeous but unwanted visitors

Oh, Casper!

It's good to be back although I've got a lot to catch up on so I'll be popping along to visit everyone and reading about what you have been up to over the next few days.

Golden Glory and a bit of Jane

I know, you wait for ages then two posts come along on the same day but I just had to show you this photo. It was taken last night when we had one of the most glorious sunsets I've ever seen.

Actually no reproduction could do it justice as the colours changed so quickly from yellow to gold and then to orange before turning pink and then dark red before disappearing. I gazed and gazed for ages. Over the back of the house it was almost pitch black but out at the front we had a spectacular display of light and colour.

I've just found this quiz on Rosie's Wuddled Murds blog and I couldn't resist having a go seeing as I'm having a rather lazy day to day. Which Austen heroine are you ?

I am Elinor Dashwood!

Take the Quiz here!

Still with an Austen theme. Sarah at This Closet isn't Big Enough has started an interesting new blog called A Jane Austen Fan and it is well worth a visit.

Sky

After the mellow mood of yesterday, today has been a day of doubt and frustration. Perhaps tomorrow will be different again.

Taken today at 4.30p.m. from our front garden

The Devil's Cake I mentioned yesterday was so easy to make and is delicious. The 1st November means 'Happy Birthday' to my friend P and my brother-in-law M - hope you both have a wonderful day.
