Into January

Well I did say in my last post that I hoped the wintery weather would stay away for a few more days, but of course, it didn't listen.  After a light dusting of snow on Sunday we woke up to more snow on Monday morning.  Bags were packed and we were ready to travel.

The garden always looks pretty covered in snow and the sunlight was a bonus.  Photos above and below taken from our bedroom window.

The sun in the trees in the school nature reserve behind our hedge was so beautiful.

I ventured outside to take the photo above.  It was time to leave home and see how far we could get along our journey.

The roads out of the city were very slowly passable.  As you can see it says -5°C on the dashboard. By the time we reached Ashbourne and beyond the roads were almost clear, it was a good job we decided to at least try to get out of the city.

My cousin's funeral went well and her long life was celebrated with both laughter and tears.  When we visited her in hospital back in November she was proud of being ninety four and three quarters and was insistent the three quarters were important. We gathered afterwards at her favourite restaurant - link -where it was 'fish and chips' for all and a gift of flowers for her cousins and friends.  My cousin and her husband had their wedding reception at the restaurant way back in 1951.  Apparently I was there as a babe in arms, just a few months old.

We had to leave the flowers in the car overnight as I thought the hotel room might be too warm.  They survived well until we got home.

We stopped briefly at Carsington Water on the way home for a quick leg stretch but it was so very cold.  The robin above was happy to pose for a photo.

The water in the reservoir was still very low.

The paths were too icy to walk safely.  We decided to make for home and stock up on food on the way.   Thankfully, we don't have to venture out for a few days because another storm is expected.  Will there be more snow?

All for now.  Take care.

  1. At least you got there and back safely. When I looked at your restaurant link, I thought I know that pub, but our Devonshire is in Belper, but very similar, although ours had the first topless barmaids apparently! Very wet here, stocked up on food, so hopefully we will be ok. Take care. Xx

    1. Thank you Gill. The Devonshire in Upper Langwith used to be The Devonshire Arms, I used to pass it every day on the bus from our little village to school. Your Devonshire sounds as if it has had a bit more of a colourful history than this one:) Snow here again today. Stay safe and warm:)

  3. Fantastic, your garden looks so beautiful, what a lot if snow you had! Good job you were able to set out for your celebration, so glad it went well, I don't suppose you remembered the restaurant though! The weather is all over the place, it's been a bit warmer today but rainy later in the day. 😊

    1. Thank you CK, the outside of the pub was familiar as I used to pass it most days on the school bus. It was a little village pub then. Yes, weather is strange at the moment, more snow here today but not too cold. Not a day for venturing too far:)

  4. I am glad you were able to get to your cousin's funeral, despite the weather, and you could celebrate her life. Your garden and the nature reserve behind look so pretty in the snow - like Narnia :) A lovely photo of the robin and I do like the sculpture in your last photo. We had loads of snow last night from the storm but it seems to be thawing now and it is sunny. Take care in the cold weather Rosie.

    1. Thank you Caroline. We made the right decision even though I was worried about the weather. The trees all look dull and brown again today as last night's snow has melted away, no sun here though. Take care and stay safe and warm:)

  5. Your garden looks so beautiful in the snow. I'm glad you were able to drive safely to your cousin's funeral and celebrate a life well-lived. The robin photo is wonderful. I do like your English robins much more than our North American ones which really aren't robins at all. Enjoy hunkering at home until the next storm passes.
