A Wintry Wak

Our walk on Thursday took us to the woods on the Trentham Estate.  We followed the monument walk.

It is also part of the Two Saints Way.

The Two Saints Way is a long distance walk between the Cathedral Cities of Chester and Lichfield.   The two saints of the walk are St Chad and St Werburgh both of Saxon nobility who spread Christianity across the Kingdon of Mercia.  More info here

Back to the walk.

The muddy paths were frozen solid and crunchy underfoot.

It was very cold and snow was in the air.

I spent time looking at the frosty leaves.

  they were quite beautiful.

Frosty Ferns

Above Oak leaves and then a Bracket Fungus.  Amazingly still undamaged by either human or animal.

The monument to the first Duke of Sutherland through the trees.

A distant cottage across the fields.

As we headed back to the car the snow was quite heavy. Fingers and toes were cold. By the time we got home it was white over, by late afternoon it had all gone.  Last evening, after a hail storm in the afternoon, we had another covering of snow, this morning it had all gone and it has rained continuously, how weird the weather is at the moment.

  1. I love your photos of the frosty leaves - the kind of detail that tells much about the time of year and the weather at the time. It's certainly been unpredictable and varied already this year.

  2. You are doing well for snow this year and it's only just started. Good job you were able to get out for your walk and back without any hassle. The frosty leaves are magical aren't they. 😊

    1. The leaves were gorgeous, I just kept taking photos of them. Hope the snow stays away for a few days as we have one or two appointments this week:)

  3. I love the frosty leaves photo :) What a great walk it looks. I had not heard of the Two Saints Walk so thanks so much for the link. Can't see me doing the whole thing mind you! But it would be interesting to look at the sections near Lichfield.

re: the link I visited the Staffordshire Hoard exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery a few years and it was just fascinating. The craftsmanship of the pieces is just amazing.

    1. It is a lovely walk with a great view over the gardens. I remember when the Two Saints Walk opened. only a few years ago, the first people walked in Saxon dress from one end to the other. It would be nice to walk some of it in short stretches, given that you have to double back each time. We did some of the Derbyshire trails and canal walks that way. There is some of the Stafordshire Hoard in the Potteries Museum, it is wonderful to see. There is a great anger here at the moment as both that Museum and the Gladstone Museum are under threat of closure or partial closure, curators have or will lose their jobs and both will have a shared skeleton staff. Gladstone is to be marketed as venue for film and tv over the winter months and only open in the summer:( It's all very depressing:)

  6. Wonderful photo's, particularly the fungus. Do you wear spikey things on your shoes/boots to keep from slipping and or falling with ice underfoot? I don't like to walk in winter for fear of falling. However, since we're not currently home, we have good weather and I've been able to walk and or bike ride almost everyday since arriving. Today, we had a lovely walk on the beach. That will spoil me for sure.

    1. Thank you Sandy, we usually find fungus that has been broken up either by animals or humans so it was nice to see an undamaged one. It wasn't very icy more crisp and then damp. I did fall on ice last year and it took ages to feel right again although I didn't break anything, thank goodness. I'd love to walk on a beach, haven't seen the sea for over two years. Hope you have a great time:)

  7. I thought I'd left a comment, but we'll try again. Thanks for taking us on the lovely walk & I enjoyed the photos & info. We love doing rail trail walks & find it best to do them in sections as some are very long. Weather is weird here too at the moment. Take care & hugs.

    1. Oh, I wonder what happened? Glad you tried again. I still have problems sometimes leaving comments. Glad you enjoyed the walk. The rail trail sounds interesting, I was thinking of water rails but perhaps it is something different? We've done most of the longe trails not too far from us but always in shorter sections at a time. Keeping my fingers crossed the snow stays away for a few days. Take care:)

  8. Exquisite frosty leaves photos. :)
I remember you like Angela Harding and I thought of you recently as I was given her new book ' A Year Unfolding ~ A printmakers View' for Christmas. It's full of her stunning wildlife prints and lovely to dip in and out of. X

    1. Thank you shazza, How wonderful to have been given the book as a gift, I love her illustrations. I saw it on the Down to Earth website when I looked for a calendar but I didn't get one this year as we were given a Jo Grundy Country Year one. I bet you are enjoying the book:)

  9. The frosty leaves are wonderful Rosie! I have never seen anything quite like it! We haven't had any snow around these parts since early 2021 or it may have even been 2020! :)

    1. They were lovely, Simone, I was lucky to catch them at just the right time. I hope the snow stays away for a few days, once it is here it stays on the ground longer up here at the top of the hill than anywhere else nearby, even when the main roads are clear:)

  11. Out blog walking and thought I'd pop in to say hi. Didn't walk yesterday, but about to head out today, so getting a walk in almost daily. For the next couple of weeks, it won't be the beach walking but, still good with interesting things to see.

    1. Hello Sandy, thank you, I'm okay, just recovering from a small op on my right arm which has stopped me typing and doing lots of things as I'm right handed. Hopefully all will be well again soon:)
