In the Meadow

On Saturday morning we visited the RSPB Reserve at Coombes Valley where we took a gentle meander through the meadow.

I hadn't been feeling myself for a couple of days after falling in the garden trying to avoid stepping on next door's new puppy!  It had come through the hedge and was racing around our garden like a child in an adventure playground.

The views across the valley from the steep meadow were wonderful.

The meadow was full of orchids

Above are Greater Butterfly Orchids below an orchid we are not sure about. Marsh Orchid perhaps?

We also saw lots of little butterflies and moths

Chimney sweeper moth

It was cool and shady to linger awhile under the broad branches of the oak tree

It's good that I was feeling a lot better by the time of our next adventure which had been planned for some time and took us a bit further afield.  We have to plan our days around leaving a very elderly cat with back leg problems who needs lots of attention and medication twice a day.

We managed a round trip of six hours which was a little long to leave him but he coped.  I'll report on our visit in a future post but here is a little taster.

Mister Finch at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, two hours to get there, two hours there and two hours to get home but well worth the visit in such hot weather.
More of Mister Finch and two other wonderful exhibitions soon.

  1. I am so sorry you haven't been feeling 100% but glad to hear you feel a little better now. The meadow at Coombes Valley is glorious. I have never seen Butterfly Orchids! Great photo of the Chimney Sweeper moth - I have tried getting photos of those before and found it impossible!

A lovely set of photos and I look forward to seeing Mr Finch and the other sculptures soon.

    1. Thanks, RR it took ages to get the photo of the moth, the meadow at one side was full of orchids especially the butterfly orchids. Mister Finch's exhibition was wonderful and also one in the Georgian chapel which I loved. I'll write more later:)

    1. Thanks Janet. Usually stairs and cat with me, the puppy came out of nowhere right under my feet - it's smaller than our cat!:)

  4. What a coincidence - I did exactly the same thing on Saturday afternoon, a wander in that very same meadow at Coombes! The orchids were looking lovely.

Oh sorry about the fall. Not a bit fun. Yes, do rest and get over it, so you can continue summer adventures. And take us along!

  7. Hope you’re feeling better. Falls really shake you up. Looks like a wonderful place to visit. We are having the same problems with our cat. Kidney problems means regular medication now poor thing. B x

    1. Thank you, Barbara. It's hard to know what to do for the best as cats get older, ours takes medication for thyroid and sometimes medication for his back and legs, but he stil loves his food and sitting on knees:)

  8. Not good about the fall, but as long s you are on the mend & OK. A lovely walk with such pretty orchids. I know where the sculpture park is & went there in 1991, but everything had been whisked away for cleaning or being changed ready for Spring (we were there in March that year), & we've not been again on any of our trips. Maybe next time. Take care.

    1. Thank you, Susan. No bones broken just muscles pulled. The Sculpture Park was looking wonderful for the summer but we didn't have time to walk around it all so just concentrated on the exhibitions we wanted to see. I love it there, hope you do visit again one day:)

  9. I hope you're feeling better now, a fall is a bit of a shock at our age! The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a smashing place especially in the sunshine so I look forward to seeing your next post. By the way, I've been trying to look at your June Scavenger Hunt post but it kept saying it didn't exist. 😊

    1. Thanks Karen, yes falls seem harder to cope with the older you get, I feel less sure footed than I used to be. The Sculpture Park was looking wonderful. Sorry about the Scavenger Hunt post, I was adding a couple of photos and moving my mouse to save when the screen froze for a second and my mouse hit publish, I had to unpublish as it was too early for the hunt and the post wasn't complete:)

  10. I'm glad that you didn't hurt yourself seriously, but a fall does shake you up and aches come out afterwards. The walk in the meadows looks wonderful especially when you can spot orchids and butterflies. I look forward to hearing more of your visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

  12. Hi Rosie, you may already know about this but I've just seen a poster about a Tudor Fair on Saturday in Alstonfield with Piva playing in the evening in the church - I thought of you.

Tickets were £10 for Piva, I saw it via the Churnet Valley facebook page, shared by Support Staffordshire

Just thought I'd mention it as I though you would enjoy it!

    1. Thank you so much Louise, it sounds like a wonderful day dosen't it? We actually went to a Piva concert last night at Little Moreton Hall - out in the courtyard with the house martins and swallows swooping overhead it was quite magical - a treat for Paul's birthday:)
