It's been a busy week. Tuesday saw us at the RAF Cosford Museum and David Austin Rose Gardens which I wrote about on my last post. Wednesday we were busy in the garden and we were thrilled to be able to pick our first tomatoes and strawberries.
On Thursday we drove over to South Lincolnshire to visit a friend. We stopped at a garden centre just outside Melton Mowbray for a breakfast of coffee and toast and when we came out of the cafe we found that these old cars, all Fords I think, had arrived in the car park.
After lunch I was able to take a little walk around the market town of Spalding. I popped into the Museum where I used to work and then crossed the bridge into the town. We used to live on the opposite side of the river to the Museum so every morning I crossed that bridge on my way to work. There is a new footbridge now.
On the way back we stopped off at Whissendine Mill which is between Oakham and Melton Mowbray. It was very hot on the journey home and we were stuck in a long traffic queue in Kegworth in the full glare of the sun!
Yesterday we had a leisurely walk around the lake at Trentham Gardens. We saw two new families whilst we were there.

and a family of swans at the side of the lake in the gardens.

I've never been to Spalding, or to Lincolnshire at all, but I've heard about it quite a few times and I believe it's a pleasant town to visit. I like the two families you saw at the lake!
ReplyDeleteThe swans came out of the water just as we were walking by so we were lucky to see them. Spalding is quite a pleasant town we enjoyed living there but it has changed quite a lot since we left in 1995 some things better some not:)

DeleteYou do live in a lovely place Rosie with so much near enough on your doorstep.So many lovely outings and places of interest. You have a lovely fruity harvest! I have been picking the occasional strawberry from my plants and eating straight off the plant. I only have tomato flowers at the moment but I was late starting them off this year. I do love the wicker family and the beautiful family of swans. x

ReplyDeleteI thought they were all Fords but I also thought all early Fords were black so to see all the colours was very interesting:)
DeleteWhat a week!!! The tomatoes and straberries look delicious, it's wonderful pick up your own fruit and eat it. I have a little orange tree, three mandarin orange trees, a plum tree, a japanese plum and apricot tree and I enjoy eating the fruits.

DeleteSome lovely days out there Rosie. I love Lincolnshire, John's family came from Gainsborough and we've spent many a weekend looking for long lost ancestors, some of whom owned the local windmill in a neighbouring village. I like the wicker family and I remember my dad had an old Ford similar to those in your picture. x
ReplyDeleteI like Gainsborough one of my friends used to work at the Old Hall and I loved going there. I'm always fascinated with windmills too and there are quite a few in Lincolnshire:)

DeleteIt's years since I went to Spalding. I'd forgotten what a nice place it was. Must go back soon.
ReplyDeleteWe left in the mid 90s and it has changed quite a lot since then but it is still very pleasant. If you go take the water taxi up the river and the Coronation chanel to Springfields and back if you have time a former colleague of mine is one of the taxi pilots:)
DeleteYou certainly get around Rosie visiting all these interesting places - I enjoyed looking at all the pictures. And how come you have tomatoes already - I am jealous, and outdoor strawberries too - neither of mine are anywhere near ready!
ReplyDeleteAh well - we had a pot with compost and tomato seeds for Christmas so planted those early and three of the plants survived and they have fruited earlier than the others we bought later they are still waiting to ripen. The strawberries were green/yellow last week and the bit of sun we had towards the end of it ripened them all:)

We did have a busy week. This week will be quieter as we are looking after next door's cat so we will be hopefully working in the garden if the weather holds:)
