Waiting for the Snow

Brrr... it's cold today!  Well I guess that is stating the obvious but the cold accompanied by grey, misty louring skies all adds up to the fact that yes, the weather forecast was right - it will snow.  In fact as I type a light dusting of fine snow is falling gently over the garden just like icing sugar shaken from a sieve on to the top of a cake.

We were up and about early this morning but even so the birds were queueing for their food, the robin having ventured down onto the patio quite close to the back door to see why it was taking so long for breakfast to appear,  I dashed out and filled up the trays, cups and feeders and sprinkled extra on the ground to keep them going - they will need all the energy they can get to survive in this cold.  Soon there were blackbirds and starlings, sparrows and robins as well as the thrush all feeding together in silent desperation.

We ventured up into the city as we needed ink cartridges for the printer as well as to stock up on milk, fruit and vegetables for the next few days.  We had coffee at the museum before we started the food shopping.  We wanted to set off for home before noon as the all the electronic roadside information panels were warning of snow from about then onwards.

Now we are back home, the birds fed again, cats warm against the radiators. There are  plenty of papers and magazines to read and a good book too (see my last post) and the wonderful -  Borgen - on television this evening so I don't mind too much if the snow falls.

If you have winter weather where you are stay warm and if you have to travel in it stay safe.  Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. It's been snowing here for a couple of hours and it's sticking to the main roads now.

It looks like you are well et up for a weekend indoors now with your magazines!

We were really hoping to go the annual Marsden fire festival later as it's the first year we've had the opportunity but I don't think we're going to make it beyond Buxton unless the snow decides to stop!!

  3. I bet the birds are glad that you are thinking of them Rosie. I worry about my hens out in the cold. Heavy snowfall is predicted in London tonight so I have stocked up on food so I don't have to go out tomorrow. I have books to read and crochet to do so I am happy! Look after yourself in this cold spell. x

  4. We've just got sleety rain at the moment, thank goodness. I've begun to hate snow, after the last few winters.
You sound ready for a cosy time no matter what the weather brings!

  6. I have to admit I can't wait for it to snow. I love that cosy feeling when curled up up indoors on thevsofa with plenty to read around me. I might think differently about the snow on Monday morning though when I am doing the school run! We haven't any sign of any at the moment here in south Essex and have wondered ourselves today whether this is just a big build up so the meteorologists don't have egg on their face if they haven't pre-warned us. It is very cold though.

  10. It's snowing steadily here (which won't surprise you in the slightest). The garden is quite white and I've no intention of going anywhere else tonight (or tomorrow, unless it clears earlier than expected).

  11. It seems we were all waiting for the snow today. I hope it is still there in the morning so we can go for a walk.
I too had to feed the birds twice today!

  14. The snow has certainly arrived here, we've had about 3 inches. I shall have to put out extra food for those poor hungry birds. Unfortunately I can't stay inside as B Baggins will be requiring his walks as usual:) DH is away so I get to do them all - lucky me!

  15. Glad you got back in time. Thank goodness the temperature has gone up so we don't get it going icey, that would be too much. Stay warm.

  18. How funny is it, we have zero snow and none is forecasted for the next week, with temps in the 40's!?

  20. The cold spell has brought redwings to our garden. Maybe you have them too?

It seems weird seeing Hanley photographs on your blog, we went before Christmas in search of a camp bed. I was very sad to see how depressed the area looked around the museum, so sad.

  21. We have been absolutely hooked on Borgen and the good news is we are promised another series at the end of the year. Don't the Danish make terrific TV?

The birds have been getting regular top ups all this week - poor things - just as they were thinking spring was on the way....

I concur with everything you say about libraries Rosie. I'm an avid library supporter and like the fact that I can go on-line and order books and create a wish-list etc, but I hate those machines! The librarian may be a dying breed I fear.
