Photo Scavenger Hunt - March

It's the end of March already and so I'm joining in again with the Photo Scavenger Hunt kindly organised by greenthumb at Made with Love  just click on the link for other participants.

Circle

A mill stone at Rowsley Mill near Bakewell, Derbyshire.

Card
I was delving into my postcard album to chose a card.  I have lots I've collected over the years from places we've visited.  I finally chose the one of The Pilgrim Rabbit carved about 1325 for St Mary's Church, Beverley in Yorkshire.  It is thought to be the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland and as on 1st March we always say 'White Rabbits' I thought I'd include it.

Window

A window in a building in Bakewell in Derbyshire

Art

One of the upstairs art galleries in the Harley Gallery near Worksop in Nottinghamshire

Skyline

A skyline across the rooftops taken at Castleton in Derbyshire

A favourite word
I've been fascinated over the last week by the partial eclipse and by events in Leicester and the re internment of King Richard III.  I was particularly moved by the reading of Dame Carol Ann Duffy's poem 'Richard' but also the sermon given by the Bishop of Leicester and one phrase stood out for me when he spoke about how the events over the last few years of finding, identifying and re interring the remains of the last Plantagenet king had joined us all together into a 'we' society rather than a 'me' society. I rather liked that.

Movement

A skateboarding dinosaur!  Well, it was on wheels and was being moved into place for a new 'Dinogolf'' crazy golf course at Bridgemere Garden World.

Bathroom

The queue for the 'bathroom' at the top of our garden

Car

A rather long car or stretch limo parked in Hanley market place.

Plate

A plate used for reminiscence quotations in the bottle oven room at the Middleport Factory, Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent.  There were lots of plates with people's memories written on them.

Something you made

Homemade lunch - carrot and parsnip soup and a roll

Whatever you want

A few months ago I was contacted by e-mail by a lady who had seen my genealogy pages on-line and had a photo dated 1906 that she wanted help in identifying.  I tried to help as much as I could but we were rather confused by the family connections- her family member was the bride.  She thought that my granny should be on this photo but I couldn't recognise her as I only knew her in her late 70s/early 80s and she died when I was 12 years old.  This last weekend I've had more information about the photo from the lady who had found someone not only descended from the little boy bottom right of the photo but could remember my granny and my father.  Not only is granny on the photo but some of her brothers and sisters and my great grandmother as well.  Granny is at the back with a black hat and a black ribbon at her neck, next to the man in the suit who may be my grandfather. Great grandmother is at the front dressed in black.  I've also now been contacted by the lady who has identified the people in the photo for us and a meeting is in the offing as she doesn't live that far away.  What an incredible week it has been.

    1. The rabbit is cute isn't it? I thought great-grandmother looked so thin and care worn, she had lots of chidren and was born in one of those court yards in central Birmingham not far from the 'Back to Backs' I imagine she lived in a house similar to the 1840s one there she was born in 1854 and lived to 1939 so she must have been strong:)

  3. Great scavenger hunt - especially 'bathroom!' I thought of you with the burial of Richard III last week Rosie as I knew how interested you were about the re-discovery of his body under the car park. That is a great wedding photo above but they all look so solemn don't they? Good luck with meeting with the owner of the photo. It must be fascinating for you to put the faces to the names of your relatives. x

    1. Thanks, Simone. Yes they do look solemn but I think they had to keep still for a few seconds whilst the photo was being exposed that's why in some early photos the people look wide eyed like rabbits in headlights. I've seen them with one or two people blurred too as they must have moved:)

    1. Thanks, Diane - I knew about the photo for a while but we couldn't place any family members on it until the lady who owns the photo was able to track down the lady who lives in Belper who is decended from the little boy - I spoke to her on the phone and she loved my granny Rose as much as I did - so lovely to talk about memories with her:)

  7. Haha, I hoped to find a birdbath for 'bathroom'! We don't have one any more though. A great collection of photos - dinogolf sounds like fun! Very exciting to find so much from the old family photo - lovely that you are able to meet the lady too!

  8. An interesting set of photos, Rosie. I too thought of you during the Richard III events last week. They were thoughtfully done. The wedding photo is fascinating. You must be pleased that the lady who contacted you has helped in adding to your family history research.

    1. Thanks, Linda - I've been fascinated by Richard III since the late 60s early 70s and joined the Richard III Society in 1974. I thought the services were very well done and a lot of thought had gone into them. I just so astounded and honoured that he has been found and laid properly to rest during my lifetime:)

    1. Thanks, Amanda - the rabbit is cute isn't it? The dinosaur was being moved into place on the trolly by the workmen but it did look as if it was just going to set off on its own:)

  15. That's exciting. The family tree bit. So much to find out. Again you're taking me back to times spent with my grandparents. We used to go to Bridgemere. Not sure what they would have made go dinosaur crazy golf there.

    1. Bridgemere has changed quite a lot over the last few years now it is owned by the Wyvale group. Lots of franchises in there like Hobbycraft, Lakeland, Cotton traders and etc as well as garden things, gifts and farm shop. The dinogolf has been placed near the entrance to the gardens:)

  17. Hi Rosie! I've been going through all the scavenger hunt posts this morning, now that things have settled down for me, and everyone has such awesome collections for March! I enjoyed every one of your photos. I thought "We" was awesome because of all that it represented. Richard III has always been fascinating to me since I first read Shakespeare's play about him in Grade 11. I always felt that he had been misunderstood and misrepresented by history, so his discovery, identification, and burial have been something to follow! I just finished the novel "A Rose for the Crown" by Anne Easter Smith in which R3 was a main character ~ found it in a book exchange in our little hotel in Honolulu. It was a great read. I loved Skyline ~ so calm and peaceful ~ very different from the high plains of Colorado. But best of all is your family's photo, so lovely and mysterious; but less mysterious for you now. Happy Easter!

  19. Hi Rosie, I'm back home in Victoria now and can finally view the Scavenger Hunt photos properly. I love all your photos, the dinosaur is hilarious, just love it. I suppose because of my interest in genealogy, the photo with your granny and other relatives is the most interesting to me. It really is so very exciting when we make connections.

    1. Thanks, Anne – the dinosaur was funny it looked as if it was skateboarding – all the dinosaurs are in place now the the crazy golf is open. I was thrilled with the family history photo and since my post I have been contacted by someone whose father was my father’s best friend when they were children/teenagers and he has sent me some photos of my father when he was young – so lovely to have them as my father died when I was five and I have never had many photos from his side of the family.
