A Short but Lovely Walk

We went for a short walk around Westport Lake this morning.  There was a slightly cool breeze which was refreshing after such a warm night.

We decided to walk around the wildflower meadow before stopping for morning coffee at the visitor centre.

We spotted orchids in the grass and there were lots of bright blue damselflies flitting about but all too quick to capture with a camera.

The field was full of Yellow Rattle and Buttercups.

The bees loved the orchids.

From the meadow we walked around the smaller lake where there were lots of young coots.

Many geese too including Greylags.  A Greylag here with a male Embden or Bremen goose.

Young long-tailed tits were fluttering around in the bushes trying to catch insects.
A Speckled Wood Butterfly - butterflies don't usually stay still long enough for me to focus on them with the camera let alone take a photo.

More orchids near the fence on the larger lake.

Leaves of a Lime Tree so pretty in the sunlight.

A friendly robin, mouth full of insects was presumably off to feed its young.

Lovely markings on this rock dove or feral pigeon which had its beady eye on me.

Another beady eye can you see what it is?

Joy of joys - a little bunny.  We rarely see them now so it was a delight that this one came out of its hiding place to sniff the air.

As well as orchids there were many beautiful foxgloves around the lake and in the woodlands too

  1. What a lovely walk.Rabbit numbers are down nationally due to some new disease killing them off.

    1. Thank you Barbara, I hadn't heard of the new disease - must look it up. I rememeber myxomatosis affecting the rabbits most horribly when I was a child:)

  6. This post is full of things I love. I've obviously never seen coots' feet before because I am amazed by them - they're enormous, and not webbed! Well, you learn something every day. x

    1. Thanks, Mrs T. The young coot looks as if he/she hasn't got used to the size of his/her feet yet. The adults' feet are really big and turn a blue grey as adults so they look even bigger:)

    1. Thanks, RR yes the foxgloves are wonderful at the moment so beautiful against the darker background of the trees and hedges. Coots have such big feet don't they? This one looks ungainly at the moment as if he didn't know what to do with them:)

  9. What a lovely walk with so many interesting creatures and flowers to see and capture. I was pleased that you got a photo of the butterfly. I find they flit away so quickly as do birds. It's very windy today and we've had to secure some of our trees in pots. Even though the pots themselves are quite heavy and in sheltered areas of the garden the thin trunks are being blown about.

    1. Thanks Linda, butterflies are hard to take photos of and if they do stay awhile they usually close their wings whilst they rest. We moved pots against the walls and under the table outside as it has been very windy here too:)

  11. Such beautiful nature. The young coot looks most ungainly with its huge feet as though wearing clown shoes! The robin reminds me of American robins which are much slender than our ones. Seeing the bunny must have made your day Rosie! x

    1. Thanks Simone, the coot is funny with its big feet it wasn't very old and still trying them out. It was great to see the rabbit, there used to be fields full when I was a child and even up to ten years ago:)
