Soft, Gentle Rain

After what was a warm and quite humid weekend  this morning it was wonderful to go out in the cooler air and the fine rain.

Last night it was so hot and airless, by 1a.m. we were up again, too hot to sleep, watching the full moon appearing from clouds to light up the still, early morning sky.

We'd spent most of the weekend at home apart from a quick walk to the local shop to get milk and newspapers and a quick visit to the vets to get our elderly cat Max his latest medication.  He is 21 years old and has been diagnosed with hyper thyroid and by Friday he was so lethargic we really thought he was on his way out but after a couple of days of pills he seems livelier and actually went out into the garden on Sunday seeking cool, damp areas in which to snooze.

This morning we went up to the Emma Bridgewater factory shop for a treat of morning coffee and a shared brownie (they brought us two plates to the table) and then we went through to the walled garden which is behind the factory shop.

It was gorgeous. The flowers and grasses were sparkling with delicate raindrops, making them look fresh and bright after a weekend of heat.

I've taken you into this garden before in other posts but each year it changes slightly and this year most of the plants were in galvanised steel containers which were planted full of gorgeous cottage garden flowers.

One of the chickens and her chicks were pecking in the garden.

The soft, muted colours of some of the flowers looked wonderful in the warm drizzle.

For a short while, time stood still.

As we enjoyed being in the midst of such loveliness

So many ideas that you could adapt and achieve on a smaller scale for your own garden if you wished too.

  1. That is a beautiful garden, so neat and tidy. I'm afraid mine's full of weeds and likely to stay that way until it cools down some.
I'm amazed by your cat being 21, but if we all slept 20 hours a day we might live forever.

    1. Yes, he and his sister, who we lost last August, were born April 1996. Too many weeds in our garden too but the walled container garden at the factory is so crammed full of beautiful flowers that weeds don't stand a chance:)

  2. So pleased to hear Max seems a little better and I do hope that the new medication continues to help him.

What a wonderful garden that looks and so lovely to see all the raindrops on the photos. Awfully humid here too last night - rain has finally arrived here - heavy downpour started a few minutes ago and will hopefully cool things down and do the garden good!

The brownie looks scrumptious by the way! :)

Thanks for further info on Dinosaur exhibition - have left a further comment on the post.

  3. What a lovely post Rosie. The garden photos are beautiful; the added raindrops make the flowers so special. Glad Max is picking up. My goodness 21 is such a good age and what a beautiful cat. Like the sound of that cafe with fabulous pottery. Have a good week. B x

    1. Max is still quite a handsome chap, he was gorgeous when younger and top cat in this area without every scrapping with another cat. The cafe is good and the pottery wonderful, I love the shop displays and the garden is such a peaceful haven right near the main road to the city centre:)

    1. The garden was beautiful last year but seems even more so this year and some of the containers were new as well as table top displays, chickens and chicks this year isntead of ducks and ducklings:)

  5. I so hope that little Max feels better. I can't believe that he's 21 years young! My Lilly turned 12 this year and she's as agile as ever! How lucky for you to go to the Emma Brigewater factory. I'd love to visit there as I collect Emma Bridgewater items. We've had a heat wave too down here in SoCal and I'll be so glad when it's over. I hope your week is off to a great (cool) start, Pat xx

  6. There are some great ideas there, the plants look great in those containers. It's been so hot, I can't remember when we last had rain 😊

    1. I though that lots of the planting and containers could be done on a cheaper and smaller level for backyard type enclosed gardens, even one of the features would cheer a garden up. We have had heavy rain on and off since yesterday afternoon:)

  7. Hope Max is still on the mend, it's quite worrying looking after a old pet. Our little old man (dog) is 14 this year and feeling his age.
I love Emma Bridgewater and the cafe and garden look lovely, I like the flower beds and the photo of the pink flower.

    1. I worried more about Max and his sister and now just Max more as they got older. It is hard to watch our precious pets get older isn't it? The cafe and garden are always a treat to visit:)

  9. I hope Max will be OK. We missed the garden when we went to EB a couple of years ago, but I adored the restaurant, it was fabulous. I do love my EB china!

    1. The garden closes sometimes but mostly it is open at this time of year, such a shame you missed it. The cafe/restaurant is wonderful isn't it? Especially the spotty Aga. We had lunch there once with friends and it was so good. Mostly we just have coffee there:)

    1. Thank you, Simone, the last two days have been wet and Max is now wondering where all the warm weather has gone. The chickens and bantams were so sweet pecking around the raised beds:)

    1. The garden is gorgeous as are the shop displays but I agree the wares are very expensive, even in the sale they have at the moment. At least they are made here though and that is worth paying a bit more for:)

  12. What a beautiful place and so interesting too! The raindrops do add such atmosphere to your photos. I think I will need to take the camera out next time it rains! I hope Max is improving with his new medication and that the weather has cooled down a bit. We've had a lot of rain in the north but since Saturday, the sun has been shining here in the hills :)

    1. Thanks, the rain really did freshen everything up and made the garden almost sparkle. Max seems to be getting on with his medication and taking the tablets quite easily with a pill popper:)
