I'm late with my Five on Friday post but it is good to be back after a few weeks away and I'm happy to be joining in with the lovely Amy at Love Made my Home for this week's Five on Friday. Do click on the link at the bottom of this post to find others who are joining in too.
Five things that have made me smile this week
1. Windfall apples from the garden of friends, after a visit we came home with a huge bag full and half have already been prepared for the freezer to make crumbles later in the year We are now looking for jam and chutney recipes to use up the other half.
2. Fungi So many little mushrooms or toadstools all in a ring growing over a wide expanse of undulating land close to the pathway. They reminded me of little round houses on top of an iron age hill fort. Or perhaps I just have an overactive imagination.
3. Curious Cattle - these friendly cattle came rushing across their field to the fence to say hello as we walked by along a section of path nearby.
4. Squirrels - the squirrels in the garden have been very active, chasing each other around and using amazing acrobatics to pinch the bird food. They are such fun to watch but they are still taking small stones from the path and burying them in the lawn. We think it might be that they are trying to distract other squirrels from the real food that they also bury.
5. Autumnal Trees - the trees on The Brampton in Newcastle-under-Lyme always look spectacular at this time of year.
Hope you enjoyed my five things, I'll be along to visit you all over the next couple of days.
I certainly did enjoy your five, they are beautiful photos. It was fun to see the squirrels and cattle.
ReplyDeleteThank you, the squirrels are very active at this time of year:)
DeleteSo happy to have you back Rosie. I have missed your regular posts. Those little mushrooms do resemble little homes - Celtic round houses! Lovely wildlife and tree photos too. I didn't have many apples from the garden this year - your friends were kind in giving you a bag full! I hope you have a lovely weekend with autumnal sunshine. x
ReplyDeleteThank you Simone - glad you can see the little round houses too:)
DeleteWelcome back Rosie, a nice Fall Five! I find that cows are always curious!
ReplyDeleteThey are aren't they? Always have to come and investigate:)
DeleteLovely images. I'm too disorganised to sort out our apples - I know I should get on with it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike, our friends have quite a few trees of eaters and cooking apples so have had loads of fruit this year:)
DeleteI love windfall apples too, this year I sliced them and made them into dried apple snacks.
ReplyDeleteThat;s a good idea, you can get some fruit flesh off even the most battered windfalls:)
DeleteGreat to see you back Rosie and you have brought with you a lovely five. Enjoy all those goodies you make with the windfalls. xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Jan. We made some jam yesterday, have yet to try it - I will make scones later:)
DeleteI completely agree about the fungi. They do look like a world in miniature. I love the apples at this time of year. Our windfall's get eaten by the sheep before we even see them!
ReplyDeleteGlad you can see the little village too as I glanced at it I could see the little houses they used to draw on Time Team to illustrate a site:)
DeleteSo lovely to see you back and with a great selection of good things to share too! Enjoy the apples! Thank you for being part of Five On Friday, hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you Amy, just two apples left after we have frozen some chunks and ade some jam:)
DeleteGreat to see five things that have made you smile this week. Love your description of the little toadstools - I will remember that when I next see some :) Grey Squirrels returned to our garden a few weeks ago - they often seem to disappear in summer and then return in the autumn. Hope you have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have squirrels all year but this time of year they are all over the place, chasing and eating and digging in corners, so funny to watch:)
DeleteA lovely five! You have two of my favourite things in your Five - Fungi and apples. I love taking pictures of fungi. Makes my hubby laugh. They can be so beautiful and unique. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sharon. There are some wonderful photo opportunities with fungi ad I love taking photos of apples too - on the trees, in bowls - such an atractive fruit:)
DeleteHow delightful Rosie - a fairy ring! The toadstools do look like little houses - there's nothing wrong with a bit of imagination.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend. Marie x
Just for a split second I saw a little iron age village on a hilltop much like drawing seen on TV archaeological shows like Time team:)
DeleteA wonderful five Rosie, I couldn't pick a favourite, they are all full of rustic charm. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Karen glad you enjoyed the photos:)
DeleteA lovely autumnal mood you've created in your Five on Friday blog post, Rosie. How good to receive a big bag of windfall apples that can be stored and used for some delicious crumbles and preserves later on! Squirrels are so entertaining with their quick movements and antics. In our local park they scurry about under the trees and make me smile when I pass by them. I hope you have good walking weather in your area this weekend and in the week ahead.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. It hasn't been good walking weather here yesterday and so far this morning there has been a constant damp drizzle in the air and I'm afraid I'm a fair weather walker. Hope you have a lovely weekend:)
DeleteBeautiful five Rosie. Your squirrel photos are great. I must chop apples too for the freezer. Always good to have an easy stash on hand. Have a great weekend. B x
ReplyDeleteIt is good to have apples in the freezer for crumbles and pies during the cold weather, have a lovely Sunday:)
Deletelove the squirrels. If I had to pick a favorite of your five it would be the photo of the squirrels...appear to be such busy bees.
ReplyDeletethank you, our squirrels are very active and busy at the moment, storing up food for the winter:)
DeleteLovely Autumn post. From apples to squirrels to cows and fungi -- a little bit of everything. Have a fun filled week!
ReplyDeleteThank you, glad you enjoyed the post, hope you have a good week too:)
DeleteWelcome back. I wish I had an apple tree that I could gather windfalls from. I've not done anything like as much foraging as I would have liked his year. I've got some sloe gin and some bramble vodka on the go though!
ReplyDeleteBoth the sloe gin and bramble vodka sound good -something to enjoy later when the days are short and cold:)
DeleteStill gathering apples Rosie, so if you're lucky there will be more Friday week. Just listened to a recent BBC Radio 4 Food Programme podcast about apples (a great programme I listen to every week, which I back up with a podcast link. I think you would enjoy it. Also Ali Smith on Desert Island Disks yesterday is worth listening to. Bought a book on the strength of what I heard and will bring with us next week.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing you both on Friday, hope all goes well tomorrow and things become clearer. I have an Ali Smith short story book from the library, unread as yet because I'm reading another one by Kate Ellis. Will look up the apple programme. Take care and see you very soonxxx:)
