52 Weeks of Happy - Week Eleven

It has been a strange sort of week which I seem to have spent dithering about,  being unable to make up my mind about anything or feeling anxious about things I can't do anything about.  Even so I've been able to find a few things that have made me smile ...........

1. Squirrel antics - outside the conservatory window have amused us all week, this one stretched itself every which way to get at the sunflower hearts.  It began by licking them out of the feeder then by shaking it and running down the tree to eat up the fallen hearts and then going back up to start the whole process again.

2. A trip to the theatre - on Saturday night for a performance of Rutherford and Son by Northern Broadsides.  Another excellent production this time directed by Jonathan Miller whose work I remember from productions at Nottingham Playhouse in the late 1960s. (I can still remember a wonderful performance of 'A School for Scandal' from then.)  Here is a link to a trailer for Rutherford and Son.

3. A blue carpet of crocus - spotted on our walk at Trentham gardens, the bright blue looked wonderful against the white bark of the birch trees.

4. A trip into Lincolnshire -  last week to see an elderly friend who has, over the last few weeks, made the heartbreaking decision to sell her bungalow and move into a care home.  The home is just behind the windmill in my photo and from her room she can see the sails turning on grinding days and in the other direction the spire of the village church.  Outside her window are well-visited bird feeders.  Although I'm sad she has to part with her home I'm happy that she is safe, warm and well-fed with someone to care for her twenty four hours a day.

Link to  Little Birdie  where  '52 weeks of Happy' started. Each week you find just four things that have made you happy to share.

  1. Our squirrels are back with a vengeance!!

I feel for your friend. My mother did this last year and although the care home is excellent it was still quite a wrench. Quite a relief for us though, to know that she is now safe.

    1. I think it is the loss of independence and privacy that is the worst thing for her but she accepts that she needs help with mobility, food and the anxiety of being alone through the night, especially after a break in a couple of years ago:)

  2. Lovely photos, Rosie - the crocuses are a beautiful colour. Squirrels are very resourceful, aren't they?! Sad about your elderly friend - hope it works out well for her. Abby x

    1. The crocus were just about the only colour in the garden. Squirrels are very observant and very naughty! It is sad as she is as bright as a button and can remember far more then me sometimes but at 88 her body is frail:)

  3. oh those crocuses look beautiful. They've all started opening here too in the last day or so. I like the squirrel picture and that sounds like a lovely home to be at, with the windmill view and bird to watch. Not an easy decision, but I'm sure the best one. I hope your friend settles in well at the home.

    1. I think she is settling in well and loves being in the heart of the village and she has loads of visitors. The squirrel seemed to know he was being photographed and put on quite a performance:)

  8. Week 11 already, how time flies. I love the crocuses and the squirrel. My husband's ancestors came from Lincolnshire, a village called Waddingham where his great grandfather was the miller and lived in the house alongside the mill which is still there but has been converted into living accommodation. Your photo brings memories of our trip to seek his ancestors about ten years ago.

    1. Time does fly by. How lovely to have a miller ancestor, I know Lincolnshire quite well as we lived there for about 13 years before we moved here. The mill is in South Lincolnshire near Spalding and close to the Fens:)

    1. I think this long wait for Spring doesn't help and hearing about friends who are struggling with their health makes you feel low:)

  11. The crocus are just wonderful. I think there must be bad vibes in the air this week (are they hovering around our area?) I've felt just like you, very unsettled and broody about things that can't be altered not helped by things going wrong for no reason. My sister has had similar this week also. Very messy days so far but I keep telling myself off and saying 'get on with it gal, stop worrying' Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant!! Hope things are now starting to get better in your mind. x

    1. Rant away - I know how you feel. I remember a saying from years ago 'we all want putting in a bag and shaking up' - I hope the feelings lift soon and for you and your sister too:)

  12. Hi Rosie, sorry to hear you've been a bit under the weather.
English squirrels are such funny chaps, there was one performing and entertaining tourists in Green Park/London last month :)

    1. Thanks, Michela. They are such funny creatures - I can imagine them putting on a show for visitors in the park. In our local park you can feed them by hand they are so tame:)

  13. Sorry you're not feeling so good at the moment. This unsettled weather doesn't help. I notice you went to see Rutherford and Son directed by Jonathan Miller and I'm sure it was an interesting production. Hope the rest of this week goes well with you.

    1. Thanks, Lnda. The play was written in 1912 and was about a family in the industrial north of England. It was a very dour play full of withheld emotions and looked at the way a domineering father affected his family:)

  14. There must be something in the air for Virgo's!! I could have written those first few lines myself. We are all getting ready for some SUNSHINE!!!!!! However, I feel another dumping of snow is more likely for the weekend! Sending you positive vibes. xxxxxxx
