I was given this recipe by a neighbour who had been given it years ago by a friend of her mother who in turn had been given it by her mother - you get the idea - it's an old recipe but a good one - it is very sticky though and takes two days to set enough to be hammered into small pieces.
Black Treacle Toffee
half a pound of butter
1lb brown sugar
1lb black treacle
1 large tin condensed milk
juice of one lemon
Put all the ingredients into a heavy bottomed pan.
Bring to the boil stirring all the time.
Boil for 25 minutes.
Test to see if it is ready by dropping a little mixture into a bowl of cold water
if it turns into 'balls' it is ready.
Pour into greased trays and allow to set
Hammer into small pieces

That looks really yummy and I bet it tastes delicious but I don't think my crowns and fillings would thank me for eating it!
ReplyDeleteIs this what we used to call "Bonfire Toffee"? It was only available in Autumn... around Guy Fawkes Day. Speaking of which... thought about you guys over there yesterday... and remembered past celebrations with a bonfire in the back yard, bonfire toffee, potatoes in their jackets and fireworks.... I always loved the Catherine Wheels and the sparklers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe for Bonfire Toffee my other half has been asking for me to make some every year for the last few years but I kept saying I didn't know the recipe. I will however have a go after reading this. tzjni

ReplyDeleteIf you like treacle toffee you will love Joseph Dobson traditional treacle toffee lollipops, they are delicious and much easier to eat than the toffee pieces 😀
