One morning last week we visited nearby Coombes Valley nature reserve which is managed by the RSPB. It was already getting quite warm when we arrived. We walked first in the meadow to see if we could spot orchids.
We saw quite a few of the same type.
Lots of buttercups and daisies too.
There were lots of butterflies and moths but, as usual, they wouldn't settle for very long. When they did stop to rest they closed their wings.
We returned to the car and took our flasks of coffee to sit in the picnic area under the trees.
Refreshed we then set out to walk along one of the routes around the reserve.
Not many birds spotted, Robins, Chaffinch and Dunnock, a Buzzard was heard mewling high in the sky.
We spent a lovely couple of hours just enjoying being in the fresh air. The car park and toilet facilities were open, as was the small picnic area but the Visitor Centre was closed.
Another lovely stroll through some amazing countryside. Thanks for taking us along. I loved the old buildings & all the gorgeous orchids. Take care & hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan, it was a lovely day, I was told that the old cottage used to be lived in by a wildlife writer who worked for the local newspaper many years ago:)
DeleteA beautiful place to explore.
ReplyDeleteThank you William, it is lovely:)
DeleteA pleasant ramble. It's so hard to find birds at this time of year in woodland (or most other places to be honest).
ReplyDeleteThank you John, yes it's that time of year when birds disappear after being so busy through the Spring:)
DeleteWhat a lovely place, that's just my cup of tea, I'd enjoy all those wildflowers and birds. It's the perfect time of year. I've been having the same problem with the butterflies this year. 😊
ReplyDeleteYes, there are lots of lovely wildflowers and it was cool walking under the trees. Not many butterflies around this year, counted three in the garden today:)
DeleteIt looks a great reserve. Lovely to see the orchids, wild flowers and butterflies. It can be so hard to get a photo of a butterfly!! It is good now to be able to go a bit further afield. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteA couple of years ago when we visited there were two or three species of orchid in that field but that may have been earlier in the year. I'm not sure about venturing further afield after next Monday when rules relax. I had an e-mail from the National Trust this week saying 'sponteneit' is back and we don't have to book time slots but I worry about these places getting very crowded. We'll see:)
DeleteLooks lovely Rosie. Always nice to see orchids and the foxgloves seem to have popped up everywhere now. X
ReplyDeleteThank you, yes plenty of foxgloves, I thought they seemed a little later in popping up this year? The orchids were lovely and many more around the site:)
DeleteHow lovely to see the flowers growing in the meadow.

It waas lovely in the meadow:)
DeleteIt looks lovely Rosie and I would imagine nice and cool under the shelter of the trees. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Simone, yes it was cool in the woodland areas but hot in the meadows:)
DeleteIt looks lovely and peaceful, the photo of the little house is just charming :)
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely and usually very quiet, the little house used to be lived in, many years ago by a writer of a wildlife column in the local newspapers:)
