A Morning Visit

Yesterday morning we visited the town of Buxton in Derbyshire.  It's a place we visit quite often and I've written about it quite a few times over the years on here but I never tire of its streets and buildings.

We just had a wander around popping into one or two charity shops to seek out Christmas cards.  We stopped for a coffee and toasted teacake and then visited the Museum to look at a couple of exhibitions and the local book shop where one present was purchased.

There are five floors of books in here, three floors a basement and an attic.

We'd looked in vain around the town for plain brown paper to use for wrapping presents this year but the one shop, close to the bookshop, that stocked it was closed on Wednesdays.

I love quiet mornings like these, a gentle stroll, lovely things to see and best of all no rain.  It was sad to see many of the units in the little shopping centre closed the biggest was where M&S used to be, next door Waitrose is still, for the moment, open.

  1. Derbyshire is one of the counties I would love to visit one day. I am sure I could spend a fair bit of time in Scrivener's bookshop! Just looking at the photos I get a feeling I could feel quite at home in Buxton. x

    1. Derbyshire is a beautiful county. although I wasn't born in the county but in nearby Leicestershire, I lived in Derbyshire from the age of six years old and grew to love it. I always enjoy a visit to Buxton:)

    1. There are so many hidden areas in the shop you can lose whoever you are with for ages, Once four of us went in the shop and it took us ages to find each other:)

  3. I spent a week in Buxton once but spent most of the time walking in the countryside and not many hours in the town. I can see from your photos that that was a mistake!

    1. It is a beautiful town and has so much to offer too. I always love the skylines of the domed buildings there and the imposing architecture:)

  4. I love that bookshop and keep thinking we'll go back as I got a vintage postcard (post date 1930s) of The Bay of Naples with a written message on the back. Unfortunately it was a cold day and my husband caught a chesty cold. It's a beautiful place to walk around and also see an exhibition so hopefully we'll return soon. I'm pleased you had good weather for your visit.

    1. It is a lovely shop although my knees find those stairs a bit of a struggle,it was cold up in the attic too. Your post card sounds wonderful, I always like to find them with messages on the back and dates of sending. The exhibitions in the museum were fascinating too:)

    1. So much to do there with the Opera House for evenings if you stay over. The bookshop is in Upper Buxton but worth the stroll up there from the main town as there are lots of other independant shops too:)

  7. What a beautiful town and the bookshop looks super and a wonderful place to browse. So pleased the weather was kind to you - so difficult to plan days out at the moment with so much rain!

    1. We've put off a couple of planned visits because of the weather and of course the floods around near people we wanted to visit in North Derbyshire/South Yorkshire and of course having to pass through Matlock on the way. You would love the museum in Buxton and the book shop is a gem:)

  9. Ahh dear Buxton, how I love that town! It's looking good. I don't remember the book shop, it looks a great one though. It's a shame about the shops, the Councils all around the country need to get a move on to support the shopkeepers before they all disappear. Have a lovely weekend. 😊

    1. It is a special place, the book shop is in the upper town past the Museum and Town Hall and the other side of the market place. It is so sad that many shops are closing they need support from government, local councils and shoppers to keep them going. I much prefer to look at good before buying than ordering on-line:)

  10. What a fascinating place. Love the sound of the bookshop. Can’t believe stalwarts like M and S and Waitrose are under threat. B x

    1. It is quite worrying that so many shops we have known all our lives are disappearing and nothing of the same quality to take over from them. The bookshop is a wonderful Alladin's cave and you could spend hours there:)

  11. The bookshop looks a delight! In fact the whole place looks lovely for a wander :)

It used to be that Wednesday was half day closing for the shops, I think it still is for the couple of banks left in my town!

    1. It is a super bookshop. Yes I guess it was half day closing for some of the smaller shops. Over here in the towns it is Thursday but there aren't many independent shops left now and the 'chains' open every day:)

  12. So many shops are closing their doors. Our local Waitrose is now closed, as is the next nearest. The bookshop looks very inviting.

  15. My idea of a perfect morning. Toasted teacakes, charity shops, a bookstore and a museum. Throw in a bit of crafting and I'm in heaven.
