Fox and Fungi

It's a dreary, wet and windy day today. Not a day to be out and about, no chance of a longer walk.  The garden is very wet and the grass squelchy underfoot. Many garden jobs have had to be abandoned until hopefully dryer, brighter weather returns.

A very wet female fox visited this morning. Apologies for the photos they were taken through rain spattered windows.

She looks quite sorry for herself.  This weather must be awful for the foxes, I hope their den hasn't flooded and is still cosy and warm.

On a recent walk around the lake at Trentham we spotted lots of fungi.

I know the ones above and below are Shaggy Ink Caps

but I'm not sure of any others.

The ones above were interesting and seemed to be spread around where there had perhaps been a large tree where the ground was now grassed over.

There were masses of these all over the grassed area in between the flat ones above and the ink caps.

I was fascinated by the shapes they made.

Lots of holly berries bright red against the dark green leaves.

Lords and Ladies or Cuckoo Pint.

There were still lots of cheerful, bright yellow Rudbekia flowers lining the paths.

It's a day for snuggling down with a good book.

The two on the right have been read and enjoyed the one on the left was collected from the library this morning so I'm looking forward to starting that one later this evening.

I wrote this post yesterday but for some reason it didn't publish so I have tried again today.  On a better note the rain seems to have stopped for the moment but the garden is still very wet.

    1. Thank you WoW, the three books are all British crime novels by some of my favourite authors, they all seem to have new books out at the moment, I have two others reserved at the library:)

  5. I just wanted to say that the fox has mange and this will eventually kill it in a horrible way.( you can see the fur is missing in places) If you want to help him you can obtain some drops from here http://www.nfws.org.uk/mange/ just a few drops on pieces of bread and jam or better still some dog food will clear this up within 2 or 3 weeks. I have been doing this for years to the foxes who visit us and it works.
Good luck and hope you will try to help this lovely fox.

    1. Thank you Briony, the fox did look very sorry for itself and we thought it looked like mange. We feed them each evening, as do our neighbours. We give them dog food and dog biscuits and last night made jam sandwiches. Trouble is there are three regular fox visitors and they do have a sweet tooth. I just hope this fox manages to get a share of the jam, we have badgers too and they often take some of the food. We are going to try putting out some bread and jam when we feed the birds in the morning as the last couple of days this fox has been in the garden around 8a.m. as well as later in the day. I'll look up the mange treatment and see if it's something we can share across the gardens. Thank you for your help and advice:)

    2. So pleased that you are going to do something, it only takes a few drops and we put them on the food as well as the sandwiches, it doesn't matter if the other animals eat it, it will not hurt them. I get the free one's from NFWS but I also buy them from here https://derbyfoxes.org.uk/ as well then I have a good supply. hope you find the fox improves.

    3. Thank you Briony, we have sent for the free treatment from the NFWS. We'll see what happens, haven't see the fox in the the light this morning but saw a couple of them at the food bowls last night. It was too dark to see witch ones though:)

  8. What a lovely post! Fantastic fungi, so many shapes and sizes and a beautiful fox. There do seem to be a lot of berries this year. It looks quite grey outside this morning and I think there's more rain on the way but at least all the reservoirs have been topped up again. 😊

  9. A lovely post to cheer everyone up :) The fox is so beautiful and I love the fungi photos. The weather has been so awful now for weeks and it doesn't look much better next week :( As you say it is good at such times to curl up with a good book :)

    1. Thank you RR, it is that time of year when we need a bit of cheerfulness. Our garden is still sodden so not much hope of getting final jobs done there now. Thank heavens for a good book or two:)

  10. Re: Your comment in my blog... Thank you so much, for liking my new Header! -smile-

I like Halloween. But know, that some people are 'scared-to-death' by it.

So this is a "Halloween Lite" kind of a seasonal Header. -smile-

    1. Thank you WoW, I don't mind Halloween its 'trick or treat' I'm not fond of as it commercialises it. Carved pumpkins, baked potatoes, candlelight and family stories around the fire I can cope with:)

  11. I too have been out and about finding fungi. Totally useless at identifying them though. Looks like we have found completely different ones. It's years and years since I have seen a fox so very jealous of your foxy visitor. X

    1. Thank you Shazza. Lots of fungi about at the moment, I must pop and see what you have found some of my photos weren't clear enough to use as the light levels were low when I took them. We feel honoured that the fox family visit our garden:)

  12. The rain is quite awful at the moment, it seems never ending! Poor Fox doesn't look too happy! Of course it is good for the Fungi, there's so many different ones popping up.

I've just read my first Van McDermid and really enjoyed it, i'm going to read the rest of her books now!

  13. You must get an attachment to the visiting fox family. Thankfully we had a dry Saturday which makes a difference when out-and-about. Today it's a dry day which is good as I have to attend the GP for more tests. The last thing I want is to catch a cold which is easy when the weather is changeable. I'm still waiting for books reserved at the library such as the latest Ann Cleeves and Peter Robinson, but I have a pile to read so no problem. I'm hoping to go to the Crime Writers' afternoon at our literature festival. Elly Griffiths is speaking at one session.

    1. Thank you Linda, it is nice to see the foxes each year as the families change each season, parents usually leave their youngsters and move on. Glad it is dry for you today and I hope the tests were easily done. I managed to get the Ann Cleeves and Peter Robinson and have reserved the latest books from Susan Hill, Phil Rickman and Elly Griffith. I hope you get to see to Elly Griffiths I'm sure she would be fascinating to listen to:)
