Highlights of the Last Week

Just a few things seen and done since my last post

Berries for a summer pudding, made on the last day of August and eaten on the 1st September.

Red Scallions which went into a cauliflower and pea frittata instead of an ordinary onion. They made for a different and yet lovely taste to a favourite meal.

Clearing and tidying in the garden, chopping down the daisies which had gone brown, lifting the gravel in the paths, weeding and then returning the gravel, small sections at a time.  So many weeds had grown this year amongst the pebbles that you could hardly see them, the pebbles that is.  You could certainly see the weeds!

We spotted a new fairy as we walked around the lake and gardens at the Trentham Estate.

Picked up a leaflet for Heritage Open Days.  Usually just one weekend but this year there are events over two weeks.

So many openings and events to choose from just in the city alone.  There will be wonderful things to see in every county across the country I'm sure.

A walk along the canal which was very busy.  A narrow boat had set up selling oatcakes with various fillings.  Just right for a warm snack after a bike ride or walk on a cool, autumnal morning.  Although we went, as usual, into the cafe at the Visitor Centre at nearby Westport Lake as it helps support the local Wildlife Trust.

  1. Yippee, I'm your first visitors and comment. Do I win a prize, lol. Sounds like a busy and fulfilling week. Love the ferry sculpture...she looks like she's about to take flight. The red scallions look pretty and would add color to any dish...not sure I've ever seen red ones. Must look next I buy produce.

  2. We had lots of gravel paths when we moved in here five years ago.Such high maintenance so we have gradually got rid of them and grassed them.It has made life much easier.
We really must go to Trentham Gardens.

    1. I'm sure you woud like Trentham as it has so much to offer, its lovely at this time of year. The paths are a bane we have got rid of half of them by grassing over but still have some around the pnd, the squirrels pinch the stones and bury them too so we are always topping them up:)

  4. A traditional Change of Seasons pudding! How delightful!

Getting good gardening chores done. Removing the pebbles, a bit at a time, and weeding. Sounds like the best way to do this chore. But tiring too.

A beautiful new faerie!!! She looks autumnal, with the brass leaves.

    1. The pudding was delicious with plain yoghurt and alone too. The pebbles are a pain but there seems to have been more weeds this year. The job is getting done a little at atime:)

  5. It looks as though you have had a lovely week. Looking at those fruits the pudding must have been delicious. I love the new fairy at Trentham Gardens :) We went on a canal walk at the weekend too - always relaxing and so much to see :) There seem to be some good events near you for Heritage Weekend (or fortnight!). I've been checking what is on round here and narrowed it down to just a few - hopefully will manage at least one!! :) Have a good week.

  9. I'm glad you had a lovely week. The frittata sounds tasty, the walk along the canal and in Trentham Gardens must have been interesting and you found a new fairy! It's good to hear of the narrow boat selling oatcakes to passing walkers and cyclists - very enterprising. You had s productive time tidying up in the garden too. We can look forward to the Heritage Open Days. I hope there's something we can get to in our locality.

    1. The frittata is a lovely recipe and we always enjoy it with something like roasted vine tomatoes or watercress. I hope you are able to get out and about and attend some of the Heritage Weekend events in your area this weekend. There have been one or two new or refurbished fairies appearing recently:)
