Five on Friday

It's Friday so I'm joining in with  Amy at Love Made my Home for this week's Five on Friday.  Click on the link at the bottom of this post to find others who are joining in too.

As I mentioned at the end of my last post we had to go to a funeral on Wednesday.  We decided to travel the day before and stay overnight close to the little local church in Wakefield where the funeral was to be held and this worked very well.

Late on Tuesday afternoon we walked into the town centre and as it was cold, windy and quite damp we popped inside the cathedral to have a look to see what changes had been made since our last visit a couple of years ago.  Work was still being carried out but much had been done.  Below are five of the photos I took whilst we were there.

The advent candles around the font

 View through the West door

The Labyrinth

The lights inside.......

......and the reflections outside where the cathedral was reflected in the windows of BHS opposite.

The next day the sun shone as we said our goodbyes and celebrated the life of a ninety three year old lady, my husband's aunt and godmother, who had done much with her life, loved her family and served her community well; the church was full and the atmosphere was peaceful and reflective with a few chuckles too.

  Have a lovely weekend everyone.

  2. The cathedral must have offered a lovely place of refuge on a cold and gloomy day. I am glad that the funeral went on OK. It must be easier to know that the deceased had a life well-lived and that they lived to such a grand age. I hope your weekend is filled with happy things Rosie. x

    1. Yours too, Simone. We also had a cup of tea in the cafe but had eventually to go out in the rain again and by then it was dark too:)

  3. Beautiful lights in the lovely old building. Funerals can often be sad and gloomy but this one sounded more a celebration of a well loved life. Take care.

    1. Thanks, Elaine The cathedral church still had a lot of work being done to it but it will be spectacular when completed. The funeral was very much a celebration not sad at all:)

  13. I remember the television programmes about Wakefield Cathedral and the work being done. The labyrinth sticks out in my mind. It must be a beautiful building. I like the traditional glass door with the etching of the Celtic crosses leading out into the street. I'm glad the funeral of a dear aunt and your visit to Wakefield was an uplifting experience.

    1. Thanks Linda, yes all was well in a nice kind of way. There are still areas of the Cathedral being worked on but there are peep through areas so you can watch the work in progress. It reminded me of Leicester Cathedral when it was being altered to take Ricahrd III's tomb:)
