52 Weeks of Happy - Week 45

Time for those 'happies' again, how the weeks are flying by now! Here are four things that have made me smile during the last week

1.  A Walk from Baslow  - On Wednesday we went over to Chesterfield to visit my sister. We decided to have a walk on the Chatsworth Estate at nearby Baslow.  The weather was damp and drizzly but the autumn colours in the trees were wonderful.

2.  The Yards - The yards is an area of narrow passageways and individual shops and cafes in the centre of the town of Chesterfield.  Up high along the walls are sculptures of gloved hands holding a variety of different objects relating to the businesses nearby.  The reason for the gloved hand is because of one of the former trades of glove making which took place in the Yards during the 18th and 19th centuries when it was full of cottages, workshops and outhouses.

3.  A visit to Sudbury -  Saturday was such a lovely morning that we decide to go to Sudbury and walk in the grounds of the Hall.  We didn't go in the Hall this time as we'd  visited last December for the Regency Christmas (post here) so this time we went into the Museum of Childhood which has changed quite a lot since our last visit.

4.  Wall Art - I was fascinated with the paintings and decoration on some of the walls in the Museum of Childhood.  I particularly liked the mouse pictures - I think they were depicting five differing ages of life, unfortunately a couple of them were behind a display case so I couldn't photograph them all.

Linking up with  Little Birdie  where  '52 weeks of Happy' started. Each week you find just four things that have made you happy to share.

  1. Your Baslow walk looks lovely. We were in and around Chesterfield a couple of weeks ago, but sadly didn't get to check out The Yards. Next time.

    1. We had three lovely outings last week because the weather has been so good - too nice to stay in and too wet in the garden to do anything there so out we go:)

  5. Baslow and Chesterfield are two places I enjoyed in the 60's while living in Calver for a year. I see the weather hasn't changed, but actually I didn't mind the damp and drizzle as long as the wind wasn't blowing.

    1. I know what you mean - I can cope with the wet as long as it isn't windy as well. Both places have changed such a lot since the 60s - I remember them from then too - but in essence they are still the same:)

  6. I used to do that walk from Baslow quite frequently as part of a longer route when I used to lead walking holidays. Is the sweet shop still in Baslow? And I seem to remember that Bradwells ice cream was always good.

    1. Yes, John the sweet shop is still there on the corner of the car park opposite the green - I think they still sell Bradwell's ice cream too:)

  7. I love all the gloved hands and the memory of a local trade. I love the wonky spire, too - so unique.

    1. I thought the use of the gloved hand was fascinating - there is a lot of history in those yards about past trades and living conditions especially. I love the crooked spire too:)

  10. Lovely post Rosie. Looks like you've had a great week. Sudbury - we have one in Suffolk but I expect yours was a different one. I love the yards too. In Brighton there is an area known as the Lanes and is well known for its antiques and jewellery shops.

    1. Thanks, Patricia - yes this is Sudbury in Derbyshire - I've been to the one in Suffolk too - a long time ago. The Yards in Chesterfield aren't as extensive as The Lanes in Brighton and at the moment the shops are mostly crafts, gifts, cake making and decorating and cafes:)

  11. Chesterfield is a town we must visit in the near future since it's not too far away from us. You had a lovely week visiting some interesting places and hope this week has been just as good!
