Powis Castle Gardens

On our way back from a recent short break in North Wales we decided to head further south along the coast and then make our way home through Welshpool towards Shrewsbury so that we could visit Powis Castle.  I think it's at least ten years since our last visit and the gardens hadn't changed, they were still as beautiful as I remembered them.

We went into the castle first but no photographs were allowed because the contents are still owned by the Herbert family although the property is administered by the National Trust.  Its interior is quite dark to protect the furnishings and wall hangings which are very decorative and elaborate.  So much to see, an exquisite book of hours, wonderful paintings and an Elizabethan long gallery off of which is an opulent state bedroom.    After tea and scones in the cafe we set off to wander around the gardens.

With terraces on different levels you wind your way down the hill on which the castle stands to the wonderful late summer/early autumn borders.

Past wonderful architectural features and statuary

Stopping awhile to gaze at the views of the hills beyond

To the gates at the bottom of the garden.
This border against the wall next to the croquet lawn was so beautiful!

The weather was sunny and warm after the damp mist and stiff breeze on the coast earlier in the day

The apples were ripening on the trees and everywhere you looked seem lush and green.

A perfect, restful break on our journey home.

  1. What a lovely place to visit Rosie and your photos really do it justice. My sister used to live in Newtown about thirty years ago and I remember some of the lovely scenery and buildings around. I don't remember visiting Powis Castle although I think we saw it from afar but maybe it wasn't open to the public in those days.

  3. One of my old school friends moved from Anglesey to Newtown when I was fourteen and I went and stayed with her and her family and visited Powis Castle - many years ago. The Castle and grounds are just as I remember them - thanks for bringing back memories.

  5. What beautiful gardens for a place that looks very exposed to the elements. No doubt the reason for the hedges and walls! Lovely photos, Rosie.

  6. We sure missed this beautiful gardens and castle on our way through Wales but then again it rained all the time we were in Wales so I have one photo when it stopped for a few minutes.

  7. I love Powis Castle, which gives its name to several varieties of plant (including a lavender, I think)

On our way back from Wales we headed north towards Chester so we could visit Hawarden Farm Shop!

  14. It's been a long time since we visited Powis Castle. Your photos have reminded me of just how lovely it is. A visit is required next spring or summer I think when the gardens will be looking good. The weather is suddenly getting colder and I expect the gardens will soon be starting to fade.
