After we'd watched and enjoyed Nigel Slater's Christmas Suppers on television over the weekend in which he created five simple suppers from left overs, in fact we've enjoyed the whole series of simple suppers over the last few weeks, we realised we had all the ingredients for two of the meals he prepared. So below you see open, flat mushrooms with blue Stilton and walnuts - very tasty and........
......warm, crumbled Christmas pudding on vanilla ice-cream - lovely!
Other 'leftovers' we have found in the garden!
One of our heather plants, which overhangs the steps up to the lawn, had completely covered them - broken by the weight of the snow it has supported for the last few weeks.
The water in the water butt, which stands at the back of the greenhouse, had frozen and expanded causing the bottom of the container to turn into a 'weeble' like shape, unlike the weebles though it did fall down!
I've just spent an hour in the garden checking the plants, cleaning bird baths and feeding areas and sweeping the patio - I've really enjoyed being able to get out into the garden again.
I loved the Nigel Slater programme and cannot wait for "Toast" later in the week. Those mushrooms look tasty - all my fave ingredients. Although our garden is green again, the ground is still solid. I can't remember it ever being like this. xxxx
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm looking forward to 'Toast' too - I enjoyed the book. The mushroom recipe looks tasty - I might do that tonight! The snow has gone from our garden and (sadly!) uncovered all the rubbish left by the builders! It's very grey and foggy here :(
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the mushrooms. Yummy.
ReplyDeleteWe had Nigel's mushrooms the other day. Very yummy. I was disappointed with our Christmas pudding this year which went into the bin on Christmas night. I'd read that "Which" had voted the one from Lidl the best of the supermarket puds but I'm afraid I disagreed.
ReplyDeleteI did the same Rosie, cleaning bird tables and sweeping up soggy leaves. I love Nigel Slaters recipes and am looking forward to 'Toast' on Thursday night, will you be watching it?

We also watched Nigel Slaters Christmas Suppers and are looking forward to watching 'Toast' on Thursday. I would like to try the mushrooms with Stilton and walnuts but only have some Stilton left.
ReplyDeleteI must venture out into my garden sometime and check for any damage. We still have some snow and it's been very foggy here. x
Isn't fantastic to get out in the garden and enjoy the fresh air. Very fresh air over there from what we've seen of your weather reports.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day,
Anne
We love Nigel Slater's programmes too... and are looking forward to cooking up the mushroom recipe. All our snow has gone too ... everything looks grey and dismal. Roll on spring!
ReplyDeleteLove Kathy xxx
'Grey and dismal' seems to be a recurring theme! I was in Sheffield today and the sun shone this morning :) (I won't mention that the fog closed in during the early part of the afternoon, turning the remainded of the day gr...)
ReplyDeleteGuess the food leftovers are easier to deal with than the ones in the yard:) Wishing you a Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy wathing Nigel Slater but didn't see his Christmas suppers. Don't forget to watch the programme about his life tonight!(Thursday). I like your 'weeble' waterbutt! Hopefully it has gone back to its normal shape now. I can't wait to get back in the garden again but at the moment it is sodden from all the snow and very murky outside. x
ReplyDeleteLeftovers' makeover is always my mum's favourite sport on Boxing Day :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you and Paul a very happy New Year!

Oh I have some Stilton leftover too - I might have to go get some field mushrooms!

I did the mushrooms for party food a couple of nights ago. They're yummy aren't they?
ReplyDeleteI've a few days off work at the end of January, so am hoping to get lots done in the garden. It has been seriously neglected for months now. I've caught a few of the Nigel Slater programmes. I do like his style of cookery. No evidence left of ever having a Xmas pudding here! x
ReplyDeleteHAPPY HEW YEAR...stay warm and stay happy..T.D and Company xxx
ReplyDeleteHello Rosie. I love Nigel Slaters cooking, so un-fussy and, well, simple! I have one of his books, and watch his programmes time and time again. I love the un-hurried way he does everything, as if in slow-motion. I enjoyed Toast the other evening, but it did pull on the heart strings - how sad a childhood he had.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and Paul. Looking forward to walking with you during the coming year, whether it be at Trentham or a bit further afield.
I love Nigel Slater's cookery. So calm and unassuming and very genuine. I love seeing glimpses of his abundent garden!
ReplyDeleteI watched Toast the other evening with a lump in my throat, what a difficult childhood he had.
I wish you and your husband every happiness for 2011. Happy New Year!
