February Days

February weather has been grey and damp so far.  Local walks have lifted spirits a little even if we have to zig-zag and slalom around the rain filled pot holes and continual roadworks to get there.

Some encouraging signs of Spring at Trentham this week.

Witch hazel

Daphne - the scent was wonderful, soft and sweet.

Snowdrops, flowering on either side of the pathways, glowing in the dull air like little nightlights.

Little Egret - we hadn't seen one for a while but two were spotted on this visit.  Lots of Herons too.

Cooking in a warm kitchen.  Paul made Leek and Potato Soup and I made cheese scones to go with it.

Just the thing to liven up dull, grey days.  Not the most attractive scones I've ever made but tasty nonetheless.

Evening visitor to the garden.  I could just about snap this photo with the outside lights on, he or she wasn't at all bothered as it tucked into the fox's food.

Books from the library and one loaned from a friend.  Lots of interesting reading to write about possibly in a later post.

It's raining again today we managed a walk before the heavy rain started.  Now it's time for lunch and some of the soup left over from yesterday.
All for now.

  1. I love it when you post photos of Trentham. A few weeks after my father died my mother suggested that I join her and my aunt on a trip to Trentham with her local ladies group. The women were all touchingly caring and sympathetic and Trentham was absolutely beautiful. You could almost see the stress falling away from us. It is so nice to see it in different seasons and remember that day :)

    1. Thank you Tracy. I'm glad you enjoy the Trentham posts, I think there will be many more as we visit quite often with a yearly pass and there is always something new to discover. I'm glad that you and your mother and aunt found peace there and have happy memories of your visit. Perhaps you will return one day?:)

  3. Lovely to see the snowdrops and I love the smell of Daphne and Witch Hazels have pretty little flowers. The soup and scones look delicious. You cannot beat home made soup and scones :) Pleased to see the badger(s) is/are still visiting. Book reading looks interesting and I look forward to hearing what you think of them. Have a good weekend.

    1. Thank you Caroline, the smell of Daphne is lovely as it wafts in the breeze. I'm always fascinated with witch hazel, there was so much of it there in different colours. We are hoping to see more snowdrops through February. Soup is so easy to make, we must do it more often as I always enjoy a bowl or mug of it for lunch. Take care, have a good week ahead:)

  4. What a charming way to brighten up a grey February day! I love how you notice the little signs of spring—do you have a favorite spot for snowdrops at Trentham? That leek and potato soup with cheese scones sounds perfect for cozying up after a rainy walk. I hope your weekend is filled with warmth, delicious food, and exciting discoveries. I just shared a new travel post too, and you’re invited to have a look: www.melodyjacob.com.

    1. Thank you Melody, there are more and more Snowdrops each year at Trentham, the best place is on the paths of the lakeside under the trees. Warming, tasty soup is always welcome at this time of year:)

  5. Oh, flowers already! We are still buried up in snow. I have never seen the Daphne shrib, but I must look it up because it is just beautiful.
Potato leek soup and cheese biscuits (similar to your sconds) are a favorite meal of ours too.
Looking forward to your book reviews!

    1. Thank you Granny Sue, Daphne is a lovely shrub with a strong scent and always flowers at the same time as Snowdrops. You can't beat soup and scones together, I notice when we are out many cafes offer a choice of either a bread role or a scone. I'll try to write about the books soon:)

  6. I bet that daphne smells absolutely gorgeous. Great to see a few flowers and birds out and about and even better to return home to some delicious soup and at least a couple of my favourites to go with it and an interesting book. 😊

The Witch hazel, Daphne and Snowdrops must have been a delight to the senses on your walk at Trentham. The Little Egret is a beautiful bird too with its white plumage. Thank you for sharing such a positive post.

  11. Oh flowers.........so nice you're seeing signs of spring. We're still snow covered at home, so I really enjoyed your flower pictures. Not able to tell what kind of animal visited you.

    1. Thank you Sandy, we may yet get snow but I hope not as I have medical appointments next week I need to get to. The animal is a Badger, usually woodland creatures but we do get them around here as well as foxes:)
